The Great Barrier Reef is the second natural wonder of the Earth. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world and is formed by over 2900 individual reefs, its size is approximately 344,400 sq kilometres or 133,000 sq miles. The Great Barrier Reef is located in the Coral Sea and can be seen from outer space. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park protects a large part of the reef which helps to decrease the impact that we do such as tourism and fishing. In October 2012 there was a study that was published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences which had said that the reef has lost more than half of its coral reef system since 1985.
