Scratchboard

The subject of my art work is an x-ray of my elbow shortly after breaking it in seventh grade. I used scratchboard to create this artwork, removing different amounts of the black layer on the surface of the scratchboard to create lighter and darker appearances, as well as different textures. I chose to replicate the x-ray because it is already a black and white image, and I thought it would be interesting to recreate an x-ray on scratchboard. I used gridding to get proportions correct during this project. I used the following elements of design in my artwork: balance, contrast, emphasis, and texture.

While creating this I paid great attention to the shading and texture in the photo. I like the way that the scratchboard ended up looking very much alike the actual x-ray. However, I struggled with my own patience during this project because of the time consuming process of scraping off all of the border. If I were to do more work like this again, I would chose to do a more abstract design. From this project I learned how to create an image using scratchboard.
