Spheres

For my spheres project, I made 3 spheres using the pinch-pot technique, combining two pots to make a sphere. Once I made two pots, I used the slip-and-score technique to attach them, and I smoothed the surface with a flat, metal tool. After I had three smooth spheres, I began to decorate them. I made the first sphere to look like the death star from star wars. I made an indentation in the clay, and used a needle tool to carve lines into it. For the second sphere, flattened some clay until it was about a quarter inch thick, then I cut out fish shapes and used the scratch-and-score technique to add them onto the sphere. The third sphere was my sgraffito design. I decided to make it look like tree bark use a needle nose tool, cutting jagged lines from top to bottom.

After I had completed constructing all three spheres, I started glazing them. I glazed the death star first, since I couldn't find a gray glaze, I used a white semi-matte glaze and slowly added black semi-matte. I wanted to use semi-matte because I didn't want the end result to look very shiny. The fish design was harder to glaze since there were lots of small spaces in between the fish. I used a green potter's choice glaze for the fish, and a blue potter's choice for the water. I wanted to use potter's choice glaze because I thought it would look better with a shiny finish. Lastly, I used a green underglaze on the sgraffito sphere, and then after the bisque-fire, I added a coat of clear semi-matte glaze. I liked how the underglaze looked, but I wanted it to be tiny bit more shiny.
