This course explores the intricacies of the human mind and delves into the complex relationships and manipulative influences inherent in the human experience. The elective is divided into two main sections.
The first part focuses on the purpose of psychology, where students gain insights into mental health as a spectrum, the diagnostic tools and processes that promote positive mental health, and various definitions of “normal” functioning. Discussions also encompass mental health disorders and neurodiversity.
The second section investigates the subtle mechanisms that attract individuals and groups. It examines the psychological foundations of cognitive biases and emotional vulnerabilities, revealing why people often fall victim to the bystander effect, conformity, the allure of charismatic cult leaders,
or adopt extreme beliefs. This part also explores power dynamics and the strategies used for manipulation, with a specific emphasis on the psychological appeal of cults through case studies that highlight the pathology and persuasive tactics employed by individuals with personality disorders.
