Year 9 Program Overview

Senior Years Pathway Exploration Begins in Year 9

During Years 7 and 8, students try subjects across all learning areas to develop a wide range of skills and start to identify their areas of interest and strength.

In Year 9, you are able to start focusing your program on what you would like to do more of. There are three elements that make up the Year 9 program.

Core Curriculum: continuing to build essential knowledge and skills in key learning areas.
DARE: Students will be undertaking an alternate program for one term. During this term, students will not complete Active Lifestyles and only be able to choose one elective.
Electives: providing opportunities for students to deepen their studies in a range of key learning areas, in preparation for the Senior Years. Electives are either term, semester or year long and students will do up to 6 across the year.

Elective Selection Process (for Year 9)

Information provided via Course Counselling Assembly and Family Webinar on Monday 8th September at 5.30pm.
Students and families look at elective options and seek out advice if needed from subject teachers, Achievement & Pathways Leader, Careers Coordinator or House Leader.
Students submit their subject preferences (five preferences and four reserves) by Monday 15th September.
- Please note: if choosing LORAX, Drama, Dance or Music, these are semester-based electives, and a Language is year-based.
Students receive their electives list as part of the Year 9 Fee Schedule and booklist in Term 4.

Year 9 Subject Structure

The Year 9 program involves a combination of 7 compulsory core subjects and 6 electives.

Year 9 CORE SUBJECTS

Compulsory, Year Long Subjects

Every Year 9 student will study English, Maths, Science, Humanities and Active Life for the full year.

There will be an additional additional semester of History. In the other semester, this time will be used for part of the DARE program.

Compulsory DARE Program (one semester only)

Discovery - Aspiration - Resilience - Exploration

The DARE compulsory elective is designed to empower the Year 9 Cohort of RSC to lead themselves as young adults, learn to work collectively in teams as both leaders and followers and to learn how we all fit into our community by contributing to it. As part of the program, students will participate in many practical activities locally which may include the following:

Whole Day Excursion at Pt Nepean
Whole Day Excursion in the City of Melbourne
Whole Day Excursion on the Two Bays Walking Trail
Overnight Camp in the city of Melbourne
Volunteering at Local Primary Schools
Volunteering at Local Beaches for Tree-Planting and Weeding Activities
Volunteering at Local Community Centres / Food Banks.

The cost of the DARE enhancement programs which includes the above is approximately $250 per student.

Year 9 ELECTIVES

Students will do up to 6 electives, selected from the lists below.

Note: both languages run in every term, students need to do at least 3 terms.

Selecting Subjects

All students will receive log in details to input their choices at the time the portal open. This is sent to their @rsc Gmail account.

For Year 8 students, subject selection willl be open from Monday 8th September until Monday 15th September.

Students should look at the elective descriptions carefully and ranked their selections in order of preference, before lodging them on the portal. Order is important to getting the subjects you want most.
