Are you curious about how stories reflect the world around us—and how they’ve changed over time? In Year 9 Literature, you’ll explore powerful texts from different eras and cultures, looking at how writers have responded to big questions about society, identity, power, and change.
You’ll study a range of novels, plays, poems, and short stories, and learn how different periods in history have influenced the way stories are told. By reading texts from the past and present, you’ll discover how ideas evolve and how writers use language to entertain, persuade, challenge, and inspire.
This subject will help you to:
Explore how literature reflects different social and historical contexts.
Analyse how authors shape meaning through language, structure, and style.
Respond to texts through both analytical writing and creative expression.
Build confidence in expressing your own interpretations in discussion and writing.
If you enjoy reading deeply, thinking critically, and being part of thoughtful conversations, Year 9 Literature is a perfect way to dive into the richness of storytelling across time. Students selecting this elective will need to be up to the academic rigour of closely analysing texts, inferring meaning and developing a personal interpretation of the texts.

Venture into the world of zines. What is a zine we hear you ask? A zine is a small hand made magazine. Tell the world a story whether it be informative or imaginative or both! Think a paper based Wikipedia but with illustrations, a magazine but smaller, a children's picture book but different, a recipe magazine with your own illustrations, a review on your favourite literary classic, a how-to guide for surfing/ mountain biking/knitting, or an in-depth focus on your favourite sports star, artist or influencer.
Zines are part of the national library and there's even a zines shop in Melbourne! Zines are yours to design and create. Your topic, your design - a zine maker always has full creative control over their project. In this elective you will learn the history of zines, how to craft your writing and develop your illustrating skills to create and publish your very own zine.
