Examples of finished projects
Good example of value. Overlapped pencil and great value range.
Colored Pencil Guidelines:
-Follow the same guidelines for pencil/value, plus those below.
-Pick main color & layer in additional colors (each object will probably use 3-7 colors)
-Lightly layer (do not press harder until the end or you will push down the paper’s teeth)
-Does not easily erase, so be mindful about your decisions before you make them
-You will slowly press harder and burnish (polish/blend colors together) at the end
-Practice, practice, practice. There are scratch pieces for you or use your sketchbook.
Oil Pastel Sketchbook demo:
A sketchbook example of the apple value sketch
Pencil Value Guidelines:
1) Erase contour lines
2) Focus on having edges, but not outlines
3) Start lightly, you can always build to darker values
4) Work background to foreground
5) Pencil lines overlap. Work small and build, don't try to fill in the entire object with just one big line
6) Curve lines with the direction of the object (no flat areas).
7) Use a large value range, not just a couple of values
8) No smudging, with your finger or anything else
(***Pro Tips: put a piece of paper under your hand to avoid accidentally smudging. #5 & #6 are the two I have to repeat the most often, so be sure you are following those guidelines)

Oil Pastel Guidelines:
-Follow the same guidelines for pencil/value, plus those below.
-Pick main color & layer in additional colors (each object will probably use 3-7 colors). Will probably have to use more colors than colored pencil. DO NOT COLOR LIKE A COLORING BOOK WITH THESE!!!
-Lightly layer (do not press harder until the end or you will push down the paper’s teeth). These are oil based, so they will blend easier
-Does NOT erase, so be mindful about your decisions before you make them
-You will slowly press harder and burnish (polish/blend colors together) at the end
-Practice, practice, practice. There are scratch pieces for you or use your sketchbook.
