Instructions and Timeline

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,

Course scheduling is an important part of your high school experience. This is where you have the opportunity to choose the courses you would like to take as you continue your high school journey. Here’s how it’s going to happen this year.

On December 6 during Academic Prep, students will watch a Scheduling Tutorial Video, will be provided with their Course Selection Sheet (and graduation requirement summary for the juniors), and be introduced to a Scheduling Website with the Course Catalog and Department Presentations.  (If you are in a freshman homeroom who is participating in STEM this day, we will meet with students the day before, Dec. 5.)

On December 7, English, Math, Social Studies, and Science will dedicate a portion of their class period to reviewing the Department Presentation, guiding students toward the appropriate courses, and teachers will SIGN OFF on the course selection sheets.

On December 8, Elective teachers are encouraged to discuss department offerings during their classes.  Students can ask any teacher to "sponsor" their elective choice and sign off on their elective selection.  It is recommended they ask a teacher in the appropriate Department to sign-off on their elective.  In addition, on December 8, Core Teachers will touch base with students who were absent the previous day.

When the student has selected all courses and acquired all signatures, they may turn the Course Selection Sheet into ANY teacher.  Teachers will then turn the Course Selection Sheet into the Counseling Office. Please submit your course selection sheet ASAP!

From December 11- December 15, counselors will be visiting Homerooms during Academic Prep to touch base with students and collect Course Selection Sheets that have not yet been turned in.

Beginning December 18 - February, Counselors will meet with every student individually to go over the course selection sheet. Be on the lookout in your email and your e-hall pass for a pass from your counselor.

Possible Questions:

So why the change to course selection sheets? Course Selection Sheets will show all stakeholders – students, teachers, counselors, and parents – courses selected and approved by a teacher.

What if a teacher does not agree with the course my student chooses? The teacher will explain their reasoning to the student and discuss other course options.

Can students take a course even if the teacher does not recommend it? Yes, but there is a Recommendation Waiver that notifies the parent that the school does not recommend the student should be enrolled in the course. The waiver requires a parent signature before the student is enrolled in the class. If the waiver is not completed by a parent, the student will not be enrolled in the course.

When should students turn in the Course Selection Sheet? Students should turn in the Course Selection Sheet as soon as they select courses and acquire signatures. They can turn it into ANY teacher who will then give it to the Counseling Office. Remember, please submit your course selection sheet ASAP!

Can a schedule be changed after selection?  Yes, but students should be encouraged to make diligent choices as many electives do fill up.

What if a student loses their Course Selection Sheet? Counselors will be entering homerooms the week of December 11 and will have extra copies, if necessary.  Course Selection Sheets will also be available on the Scheduling Website for students or parents to print.
