Recommended for 9th grade, this course is designed to provide students with one half of a comprehensive health and wellness program, with emphasis placed on the importance of making decisions that will lead to a higher quality of life. This course will include current concepts in the following areas: first aid/CPR; diseases; relationships; human sexuality and reproduction; choices about parenthood; and STD/STI education.
HE120 HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Recommended for 9th grade, this course is designed to provide students with one half of a comprehensive health and wellness program, with emphasis placed on the importance of making decisions that will lead to a higher quality of life. This course will include current concepts in the following areas: dimensions of health; mental health; nutrition; drug use, misuse and abuse; consumer health; and health care, careers and service.
PE111 PHYSICAL EDUCATION 1
Weight 1.0 Credit 0.5/semester This course is a graduation requirement.
The curriculum focus is on lifetime fitness concepts and physical activity. Students are encouraged to work together in promoting course and individual goals. The course will progress in skill and intensity throughout the semester.

The course will emphasize that each student determines:
Their current level of personal physical fitness in relation to health standards.

PE112 PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2
Weight 1.0 Credit 0.5/semester This course is a graduation requirement.
Physical Education at the Senior High is based on the philosophy that all students are lifelong learners. Activities will enable students to develop skills necessary to maintain a healthy, active adult lifestyle. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of team games and different lifetime activities during this course. Every activity will emphasize the fitness and skill level necessary for safe and enjoyable participation. Activities include:
Fitness I – Muscular Strength and Endurance; Flexibility; and Stress Management
Racquet Sports: tennis, pickleball, badminton
Basic swimming skills, personal water safety skills, and boating safety
Indoor team games: basketball, volleyball, invasion games, Tchoukball, team handball
Fitness II – Cardiovascular Fitness and Conditioning, Fitness Gram
Outdoor team games: flag football, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, lacrosse
Students will have the opportunity to utilize a variety of assessment tools, designed to promote successful participation. Assessments could be used to help determine:

Note: Students are required to earn 1.5 credits of PE to meet graduation requirements. PE 1 and PE 2 are required courses, valued at 0.5 credit/course. To meet the final 0.5 credit requirement, students may choose from the following courses: PE 3, Lifetime Fitness, Personal Fitness 1, Leadership and Adventure Education and Sports Officiating.
PE113 PHYSICAL EDUCATION 3
Weight 1.0 Credit 0.5/semester
Students will continue to participate in a program which offers a variety of movement styles (dance, yoga, Pilates) and lifetime, team and conditioning activities. Emphasis is placed on active participation, skill development and knowledge competencies in selected activities. Students will also participate in periodic physical fitness testing during the school year. The physical education program at this level focuses on skill and knowledge needed for successful participation in leisure activities after high school and to reinforce the desire to retain the healthy feeling associated with fitness and exercise.

PE220 LIFETIME FITNESS (Grades 10-12)

Prerequisite Recommendation: Grade of an “A” or “B” in PE 1 and PE 2, or with instructor approval.
Within this experience: 1) each student will be able to evaluate and engage in an individualized physical activity plan that supports achievement of personal fitness and activity goals and promotes lifelong participation; 2) each student will assess and use strategies for enhancing adult group interaction in physical activities through shared responsibility, open communication and goal setting.
PE221 ADVANCED STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING I (Grades 10-12)

Prerequisite Recommendation: Grade of an “A” or “B” in PE 1 and PE 2, or with instructor approval.
This course will introduce the students to how to design, implement and evaluate a self-directed strength training program that supports achievement of personal fitness and activity goals. Students will analyze the social, physiological, and psychological effects of regular participation in a strength training program. The class will be lab- and activity-based. The goal is to promote life-long participation in healthy activities.
PE222 ADVANCED STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING II (Grades 10-12)

Prerequisite recommendation: Personal Fitness 1 Grade of an “A” or “B” in level 1, or with instructor approval.
This course will provide students the opportunity to design, implement and evaluate a self-directed fitness program that supports achievement of personal fitness and activity goals. Students will analyze the social, physiological, and psychological effects of regular participation in a regular strength and conditioning program. The class will be classroom and activity-based. The students will develop and complete their own strength training and conditioning program throughout the semester The goal is to promote life-long participation in healthy activities.
PE223 LEADERSHIP AND ADVENTURE EDUCATION (Grades 11-12)
Weight 1.0 Credit 0.5/semester
Prerequisite Recommendation: Grade of an “A” or “B” in PE 1 and PE 2, or with instructor approval.
Through a carefully planned curriculum of group and individual initiatives, the students will progress through an experientially-based self-discovery program that emphasizes interpersonal relationships and personal growth. This course will have an emphasis on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” and application to daily life. The course will also emphasize participation, and the students are encouraged to extend their limits both physically and emotionally. Students are required to participate in all group activities but may decline to attempt individual challenges that they feel are beyond their personal limits. Students are more capable mentally, emotionally, physically, then they often perceive themselves to be. Given a chance to try a new activity within a supportive group, students can learn that they are usually much stronger than they may have ever imagined. At the conclusion of this course, students are required to write a self-analysis of their activities.
PE224 SPORTS OFFICIATING (Grades 11-12)

Prerequisite Recommendation: Grade of an “A” or “B” in PE 1 and PE 2, or with instructor approval.
This is a one semester elective physical education class open to students in grades 10‐12. Students will be introduced to the rules and techniques of officiating team sports. Students will also learn important characteristics needed to be successful as an official. In addition to learning the rules and mechanics of officiating, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate these learned skills through officiating a variety of team sports within the officiating class. There is also a classroom portion of the course, it is not just an activity course. Students who enroll in this class should be comfortable being in front of a class and speaking in front of a group. Students should also have the skills needed to correctly and safely play the sports covered throughout the semester; tentative sports covered will be - football, soccer, baseball, field hockey, lacrosse, volleyball, and basketball. Students will also be given contact information to assist them in finding officiating jobs within the community for youth sports. Must have received at least an A or B in PE 1 and PE 2.
