The Fall of the Grass League
Recently, players from the recess Soccer Grass League have been leaving to join different sports teams.
The Grass League used to do a double elimination tournament format. But as players started leaving the Grass League they dropped the tournament format and have gone with a free for all style where everyone can play at once.
The sudden change in the Grass League has affected many soccer players such as Charlie Thornton, an active member within the Grass League. He says, “I think that the GL is not what it was before everyone left for CRL(Concrete Recess League), but I think it is good for what it is… and the new free for all format is very fun.”
Matteo Scalia, one of the top goal scorers of the Grass League, believes that the GL isn’t as enjoyable anymore. Matteo states that “...there has been a steady decrease in players participating due to the new kickball league.”
The Grass League used to keep score of each team's points and goals but recently they have also abandoned this format and have been playing for “fun”.
Derin Sezgin the founder and commissioner of the Grass League has stated that every change made to the GL has been for the best. “I don’t think the Grass League is dying, per se. We lost players because of the tournament format, but we remodeled… We are growing again and are slowly but surely approaching our peak.”
As the year comes to a close, players like Derin are positive that the Grass League is not finished yet while players like Matteo Scalia are doubtful.
