Ridgefield Public Schools provides engaging, relevant, and personalized learning experiences so all students can pursue their interests and prepare for life, learning, and work as global citizens. In our middle schools, we actively support students through the unique and transformative years of early adolescence by providing dynamic, student-centered learning across a multitude of course disciplines. We foster growing independence, spark curiosity, and create a collaborative environment where students can explore interests and ideas. Aligned with Connecticut and National Standards, our curriculum offers rigorous academic opportunities for students to master core concepts and confidently apply their learning to the world around them.

How We Teach

Our classrooms are active, collaborative spaces where teachers guide and facilitate learning. We focus on:

• Active Learning: Students learn through a blend of full-class lessons, group work with peers, and individual practice.

• Differentiated Instruction: Learning experiences are designed using flexible grouping and targeted instruction so every student is both supported and appropriately challenged. This responsive approach recognizes that middle schoolers learn complex concepts at different rates, ensuring each student receives the specific guidance they need to confidently advance their skills and understanding.

• Real-World Connections: Units are designed to include relevant, real-world situations that provide students with the opportunity to connect and apply their knowledge and understanding in meaningful ways.

• Fostering Independence: We actively guide students in taking ownership of their education. Teachers help students build executive functioning skills, practice self-advocacy, and develop organizational habits.

Keeping Track of Progress

We utilize a variety of tools to get a complete picture of how students are progressing and to guide our daily teaching. Assessments provide actionable feedback for teachers, students, and families, allowing the focus to remain on student growth over time. 

• Formative Assessments: Teachers gather real-time data daily through active questioning, observation, and learning tasks. 

• Summative Assessments: Teachers use mastery and performance outcomes to measure growth over time. These assessments may include unit tests, comprehensive projects, science labs, assured writing experiences, or standardized assessments. 

To support students' growing independence and keep families informed, we utilize two platforms. 

• Google Classroom: Used to manage assignments, resources, and course materials 

• PowerSchool: Provides access to grades and overall academic progress
