PK-12 Department Overview


Physical Education is an essential part of the curriculum which, through human movement, concentrates on the development of an individual’s maximum physical potential and its relationship to social, emotional, and intellectual growth.  A healthy body and healthy mind enhances an individual’s overall wellness.  A sound body is an important instrument in the learning process.  


Physical education today is recognized as essential to good health and overall wellness which should begin in early childhood and reinforced by family and school community.  It is an important element in modern day lifestyles, with increasing evidence supporting the beneficial effects of activity on an individual’s well-being and learning potential.

The mission of the Ridgefield Public Schools K-12 physical education curriculum is to develop in students the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that promote a healthy level of physical fitness and lead to a commitment of lifelong participation and value of physical activity. 


Our extensive physical education program actively engages students in a wide variety of physical activities while maintaining an active, inclusive and supporting learning climate where students of all ability levels are challenged to achieve success through a spirit of cooperation, effective use of technology, sportsmanship, and respect for one’s self and others.
