6-8 Health

Finding balance in one’s physical, mental, and social well-being is the fundamental foundation for a healthy life.  Health Education, in addition to teaching key concepts or knowledge, must also teach a variety of skills students will need throughout their lives.

Skills based health education is an approach to teaching health that prioritizes teaching relevant and practical health skills over memorizing and reciting content. It focuses on developing the actual skills needed to live healthy lives. Functional knowledge is taught with the skills, but knowledge alone does not change behaviors.  Students need to develop skills necessary to maintain or enhance health and well-being.

These are the skills covered in middle school:

Grade 6:  Communication and Self-Management

Grade 7: Analyzing Influences, Decision Making and Self-Management

Grade 8:  Goal Setting, Accessing Valid Information and Advocacy
