6-8 Visual & Performing Arts
The Visual & Performing Arts Departments throughout Ridgefield Public Schools aim to create inspiring experiences that are common to all the arts: exploring, creating, performing, presenting, interpreting, connecting, responding, and reflecting. We believe the arts promote awareness of the world and provide an opportunity to seek meaning through a creative process.
The middle school offers a comprehensive arts program that allows all students to explore various forms of artistic expression, including music, art, and theater. At this level, students are given the opportunity to select from Band, Orchestra, or Music Elements in the music category. Additionally, all students participate in visual arts levels 6, 7, and 8. If interested students can also try out for roles in the musical productions at both middle schools.
In the realm of music education, students can choose to be a part of the Band, Orchestra, or opt for the Music Elements track. Band and Orchestra experiences involve collaborative group settings where students learn to play musical instruments together, instilling values of teamwork, communication, and discipline. In addition, this is the first year that the middle schools are offering small group music lessons to all students in grades 6-8. The Music Elements course provides a broader understanding of musical concepts, encompassing music theory, history, and rudimentary instrumental skills.
Visual arts education is a cornerstone of the program, as all students engage in visual arts activities during levels 6, 7, and 8. This structure ensures that each student has the opportunity to explore their creative abilities through mediums such as painting, drawing, and sculpture. Progressing through these levels allows students to build upon their skills and gain deeper insights into diverse artistic techniques and styles.
The arts program also includes opportunities for students interested in theater and musical productions. Those inclined towards acting, singing, and performing can audition for these productions. Participation in theatrical endeavors teaches students about collaboration, stage presence, public speaking, and the intricacies of bringing a creative vision to fruition.
This comprehensive arts program yields several benefits for students:
Holistic Development: Engagement in arts education fosters creative, emotional, social, and cognitive growth, nurturing skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication.
