The Science of Teaching Reading Coursework and Exam is required for all candidates pursuing the following fields:
Core Subjects EC-6
Core Subjects 4-8
English Language Arts & Reading 4-8
English Language Arts & Reading/Social Studies 4-8
This exam will be offered beginning January 1, 2021.
The science of reading is a term used to name the enduring body of research that proves how a reading brain is developed, how children become skilled readers, and what is happening in the brain when children struggle to become skilled readers. The science of reading is a collection of research that goes back many years and comes from many fields including: education, neuroscience, speech pathology, cognitive science, and linguistics.
At Relay, the science of teaching reading is taught over a series of modules. This course will not only introduce you to the research that shows how children learn to read, but also guide you in applying that knowledge so you are better equipped to teach reading.

In this self-paced course, you will develop the knowledge and skills to provide research based reading instruction in your classroom while preparing for the Science of Teaching Reading exam.
The course consists of 5 modules. The course is primarily asynchronous but there will be several synchronous classes that you are required to attend.
Anyone pursuing Core Subjects EC-6, Core Subjects 4-8, ELAR 4-8 or ELAR/SS 4-8 is required to take the STR course and pass the STR exam to be eligible for a teaching certificate.
The estimated time to complete the course is 25 hours. Suggested deadlines are included in the course to help you stay on track.
The course is graded as pass/fail with an 80% overall grade as the mark for passing. Course weighting is as follows: Practice Quizzes 5%, Synthesis Tasks 5%, Module Assessments 10%, Final Assessment 60%, and Written Assignment 20%.
