Certification support

What is certification support?

The Certification Support option supports you in earning your Texas teaching certificate as you continue your career as a teacher. This is an option for Texas Master of Arts in Teaching students and Texas One-Year Alternate Route students who have satisfied all program requirements but will remain enrolled in their program as a non-credit bearing student to complete outstanding Texas State certification requirements.

What Does this Mean?

You will need to apply for and be issued a probationary or intern certificate and secure a position as teacher of record in an assignment that matches your certification category.
You can remain on certification support for up to three terms (summer, fall, and spring).
You will not be eligible for any federal financial aid nor be eligible for an in-school deferment.

How Much Will it Cost?

For school year 2021-2022:

You will be charged an extended enrollment fee of $150 for the Summer term and $700 each for the Fall and Spring terms. These charges will be reflected on your billing statement. These charges are valid for the 2021-2022 school year.
If you have a passing TExES content test score by June 22, 2020, you will not be charged the $150 extended enrollment fee for the summer term. If you need more time to pass the TExES content test, you will be charged the extended enrollment fee for that term.

We encourage you to weight the costs of extended enrollment with your long-term career goals. If you do not choose to extend your enrollment to finish certification, you may transfer to another alternative certification program. Costs of other programs generally range from $4,000-$6,000. Some programs may accept transfer coursework, while some programs require you to start over toward meeting the certification requirements.

When Do I Need to Decide?

Residents must decide whether they intend to extend enrollment during the fall of Year 2 in the program. To be eligible to extend enrollment, your content test must be passed and your field-based experience hours must be complete by December 1, 2021. Candidates who do not meet this requirement will be exited from the certification program in January 2021.

Candidates who meet eligibility will sign up for extended enrollment in late May and early June.

- Letter accepting formal admission into the Relay Texas ACP signed within three business days of receipt
- Completed Texas Educator's Code of Ethics training
- Completed 30-Hr Field-Based Experiences
- Passed TExES Content Exam

Remaining Pre Service Requirements due June 30, 2022

- Passed PPR Exam
- Completed Year 1 Relay coursework (no upload to My Checklist required)
- Passed Science of Teaching Reading Exam (if required for certification field)
- Passed English as a Second Language Supplemental Exam (if required by employer)
- Obtained a lead teaching position in assigned certification area
- School Authorization and Internship Eligibility Form Returned from District
- Completed TEA-approved fingerprinting & pass TEA background check
- Applied for your Probationary/Intern Certificate; Received by first day of school
- Completed Year 2 Relay coursework (no upload to My Checklist required)
- Completed Texas required workshops

Milestone 2 - All Standard Certificate Requirements due July 15, 2022
- Completed internship of one academic year with required pre-observation conferences, observations, and post-observation conferences
- Interacted with campus-assigned mentor teacher throughout internship
- Gained recommendation from field supervisor and principal
- Passed PPR Exam (if not passed during pre service)
- Applied for and received Standard Certificate
