Candidates are admitted to Relay's certification program for a specific certification category. The assignment of the certification category at admission is dependent on the undergraduate course credits, the applicants teaching placement, and the applicant's/partner's preferences. Once admitted, candidates can request a change in certification category.
The chart below shows the certification categories that Relay offers along with the tests that must be passed for each.
In most cases, the admissions certification category remains the certification category for the candidate throughout the entire program. However, there are a few scenarios that make a category change the best course of action. Some of these scenarios include:
A candidate's residency placement changes
A candidate is in a grade-level band that fits within multiple different certification categories and discovers a preference for one of the options. For example, a candidate teaching 7th grade math could pursue Mathematics 7-12, Mathematics 4-8, Core Subjects 4-8, or in some cases, Mathematics/Science 4-8. If this candidate decides that high school is a better fit, they may choose Mathematics 7-12, even if they were admitted as a Core Subjects 4-8 candidate.
To request that your category change, complete the following steps.
Speak with your faculty advisor to confirm whether the category change would require a change in major.
Speak to your employer to confirm that they will accept the certification category that you wish to pursue.
Determine whether you will request the change based on transcript eligibility or a practice test.
Submit a Certification Category Change Request. You will click the link and enter your email address. The form will be emailed to you from DocuSign. After Relay evaluates the request, you will receive the completed form via DocuSign with approval or denial. If your request is denied, the form will include rationale.
