MLK Day 2023 Recap

AmeriCorps Headlines

Midyear Evaluations: Congratulations – you have officially reached the halfway point of the 2022-23 AmeriCorps service term! You received an email with key information on February 6th. Please be sure to complete your Midyear Evaluation (email from DocuSign) and AmeriCorps-102: Student Roster Report (email from research@relay.edu) by March 6th. Curious to know if we've received your items? Pop into the submission tracker (click here) - checkboxes next to your name means we have your materials!

Important Financial Notice: Failure to complete required midyear action items (Midyear Evaluation and AmeriCorps-102: Student Roster Report) by 11:59pm ET, March 6, 2023 may result in early termination/release from AmeriCorps membership per the Member Service Agreement students signed before enrolling (Step 5). Students who are early terminated from AmeriCorps will not complete the service term, therefore they will not be eligible to earn the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award in June 2023 (maximum value $6,495). You (not your employer) will be financially responsible for the tuition balance associated with the unearned education award.

Check out nominations that have already been submitted while you are there! Please also submit a picture of you in your classroom with AmeriCorps swag (t-shirt, lanyard, standing by the printed signage, etc.) to support@relay.edu.
AmeriCorps Swag: 2022-23 swag items were delivered to your listed home address in January. Each member should have received a lanyard, long sleeve t-shirt, and beverage tumbler. AmeriCorps members are required to sport the “big A” while performing service, so we encourage you to at least wear your lanyard daily. Please reach out to support@relay.edu if you have questions.

28th Annual MLK Day Across the Country: Thousands of Americans joined service projects to help create the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dreams on January 16, 2023. Volunteers united in Dr. King’s legacy by assembling care packages for community members impacted by natural disasters, revamping schools, joining local park cleanups, and helping those who are food insecure. In Case You Missed It: AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith served with US Vice President Kamala Harris and US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona at George Washington University for the campus’ annual service event that draws hundreds of students, staff and faculty. Led by GW Serves JumpStart, the administration leaders and campus volunteers created activities for children to learn numbers and recognize colors. Click here to read more and browse pictures.

Bridging National Service and Public Health: In 2021, AmeriCorps and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention established Public Health AmeriCorps as a historic partnership connecting the individual benefits of national service to the urgent needs of America’s public health sector.The COVID-19 pandemic showed that government agencies and communities must work together to respond to public health emergencies., More than 80 grants were awarded to state and local organizations in Spring of 2022, totaling more than $60 million! National Service Reports: Don't miss this year’s National Service Reports, reflecting the profound impact AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors programs, members, and volunteers made in all fifty states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico. These state reports demonstrate the scope of AmeriCorps’ presence throughout the nation with programs in nearly 40,000 locations spanning urban, rural, and tribal communities.To learn more about the impact of service in your state or community, visit the national AmeriCorps website to view and download your state’s National Service Report. AmeriCorps Week: Mark your calendars - Sunday, March 12th kicks off AmeriCorps Week! Each year, AmeriCorps designates a week in March as an annual celebration of all the ways national service members — like YOU — give their time and energy to improve communities across the nation. The national theme this year is United We Serve. Join us as we recognize and give thanks to AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers who raise their hands to help when the need arises.

Be sure to check out Relay’s social media (Instagram, Facebook) and AmeriCorps’ channels (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) for special features throughout the week.

Day of the A: Thursday of AmeriCorps Week (March 16th) is Day of the A! Join in to share your national service pride, show how serving others makes you feel or give folks a glimpse of what a day in your AmeriCorps life is like. How do you participate? Simply take a picture or video of yourself in AmeriCorps swag (t-shirt, lanyard, or other AmeriCorps item) and post on your personal social media channels with any (or al!)l of these hashtags: #DayoftheA #AmeriCorpsWeek #UnitedWeServe #ChooseAmeriCorps #RelayGSE

If not, click here to view a few slides with information on what you can expect for the remainder of your AmeriCorps term (see slide 4). Look out for more information about End of Year action items next month.
2022 Tax Resources: Tax season is in full swing. If you used $600 or more of an AmeriCorps Segal Education Award in 2022, log into your My AmeriCorps Portal to access your 1099 tax form. You will see ‘My Tax Statements’ listed on the left hand menu. Please call the AmeriCorps Hotline at 1-800-942-2677 if you have any issues logging in. You can also locate links to more tax information on our Benefits & Resources page under Segal Education Award.
