Dear Families,
1) We have a big week coming up. Lots of things, as they say!
On Tuesday, we will celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a Holy Spirit Team activity in the morning.
On Wednesday, we are hosting a group from 4H at morning gathering. They will tout their programs, and we will highlight several of our students who are involved in the organization. In the afternoon, we will go to church for Stations of the Cross.
On Thursday, we our hosting some guests from Kettering Health for a presentation on topics in health care and emergency medicine. In addition to being very practical, these topics address some key standards in our health curriculum. Here is a sampling of concepts to be covered...
Topics for K-5:
Vital Signs- performing blood pressure to show it doesn't hurt
Stop The Bleed- quick techniques for stopping a bleeding laceration
Splints- broken bones, x-ray machines, care of a splint/cast
Topics for 6-8:
CPR- recognition of when CPR should be done, hands-on practice with compressions, using AED
Sutures- watch and practice placing sutures/staples, proper care of them, and how to remove them
Stop The Bleed- more in-depth techniques for how to stop a bad bleed
Splints
On Friday, Mrs. Minnick, Mrs. Roberto, Mrs. Campbell, and I will be leaving in the early morning hours for Washington, D.C., with our 8th graders. We'll return late Monday evening.
This past Friday evening, we hosted a meet and greet at QP with the 8th grade class from St. Bernard School. It was a great opportunity for the two groups to interact before the big trip later this week.
2) Do any of you remember the old Eastbay catalogs? I used to love getting those in the mail and checking out all the sports shoes, equipment, apparel, and accessories. They always had some pages dedicated to these t-shirts that read, "Basketball is life. The rest is just details." Or "Softball is life. The rest is just details. " Or "Swimming is life. The rest is just details." You get the idea. It seemed like there was one for every sport!
I think that the gospel reading from Friday's school Mass essentially says some version of what these t-shirts were proclaiming. In this gospel, Jesus hands us the Great Commandment: Love God and love one another. It is undoubtedly true that the details of Church doctrine and the details of all the many bible stories and moral parables help us understand what this love looks like. But they are still details. The main point is love.
Holy love is life. The rest is just details.
Christ in Self. Christ in Other.
Sincerely,
Josh
