Dear Families,
In his homily at school Mass on Friday, Father Pucke talked about St. Ignatius of Antioch.
Perhaps less well known than his his fellow saint by the same name, Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Jesuits in the 16th century, Ignatius of Antioch was a 1st century Christian condemned to die for his refusal to reject Jesus.
On his long death march from Antioch to Rome, he wrote numerous letters to the early Christian communities in the towns through which his escort of Roman soldiers led him. One of these letters describes the centrality of the Eucharist to the Christian faith. As the "medicine of immortality," it elevates us to a plane of existence beyond the finite and fleeting things of this world. It moves our hearts and minds beyond the plain dimensions of this worldly realm.
We recently challenged the students to locate the heart of Queen of Peace. Where is it? Some said the hallways, the office, or the cafeteria. Others said the church, the crucifix, or the collective people of the church community.
The answer? The tabernacle, which houses the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
The Eucharist is the official "source and summit" of our faith. The Eucharist resides in our tabernacle, to which we genuflect in reverence. Without the Eucharist, there would be no Queen of Peace. Sure, we could build the buildings and fill them with like-minded people. But these buildings would stand on cold ground and the people in them would flounder with half-filled hearts.
The Eucharist is the real presence of Christ, who is also God, who is also Love. This love is agape (uh-gop-ay) love, surpassing all other forms, and made of a main ingredient called sacrifice.
.........
Speaking of sacrifice....thank you to those who have sent in coats and other items for our Saint Vincent de Paul Society and food donations to our Serve City cause. We have already filled up two large receptacles.
These might not be the world's biggest sacrifices, but they are small ones of time, talent, and treasure that add up to a bounty when many hands and many feet are doing the work of love.
..........
Our school safety conversations continue. Last Wednesday, the staff discussed the results of a survey on the topic. Below you will find a link to the same basic survey. The only changes consist of some added questions that are relevant to parents but not staff, and some subtracted ones that don't pertain.

Christ in Self. Christ in Other.
