Hour of Code

The Hour of Code is an event that happens during computer science week each year in December. Students across the world are challenged to do at least 1 hour of coding during that week. However, students can continue to practice their coding skills throughout the year and go beyond an Hour of Code.

How to Teach an Hour of Code in Your Classroom

1. Choose an Hour of Code activity for your class to do (unplugged or digital).

2. Have a class discussion about what computer science is and how it affects our lives. (Or you can find a guest speaker to inspire your students.)

3. Show an inspirational video (I've added some below).

4. Talk a little about growth mindset. For example, "It's okay to struggle and try things that are challenging. That's what helps our brains grow. If you get stuck, you can ask a friend. A good rule is 'Ask 3 before me'. (That way the students work together before giving up and asking the teacher.)

5. Let students code!

6. Celebrate their success and efforts by reflecting on the experience. You can give them a certificate and/or print out Hour of Code stickers (stickers are 1" diameter, 63 per sheet)
