The Code n' Go Mice kit includes 6 activity sets, all of which include the following:
30 double-sided coding cards
10 double-sided activity cards
cheese wedge
16 interlocking, green maze grids
22 purple maze walls
3 orange tunnels
1 blue Colby mouse
1 Phillips screwdriver
3 AAA batteries
Please note that the site is responsible for replacing batteries and/or any broken or lost equipment.
The grids are easier to build if you lay out the individual grid pieces in the same direction (see image to the right)
The red lightning coding card corresponds to the red button on the mouse. It makes the mouse do one of three random actions.
For younger students, teachers may need to build the mazes ahead of time as the green grid pieces can be difficult for little hands to put together.
For older students, have the students put the mazes together. Then display an activity card on the document camera and have them place the purple walls themselves to match the activity card.
Younger students can use the coding cards to plan out their code, while older students can write out the code on paper. (It helps to have them plan out their code before giving them the mouse.)
It helps for students to act out the steps as they figure out the code, or some may move the mouse along as they plan.
Review vocabulary such as forward, coding, rotate, debug, etc.
As an extension activity, students can create their own mazes by placing the cheese wedge, purple maze walls, and tunnels themselves. Then groups can rotate around to another team's maze and try to complete it. Students can also create an extra large maze by connecting multiple sets together.
If the mouse starts to veer to one side instead of going straight, this usually means the battery is low. Replace the batteries and start again (3 AAA batteries).
Make sure to switch the mice to OFF when done.
