The Pre-Session Student Teaching Notebook serves as a professional record of the teacher candidate’s experiences, observations, instructional participation, and growth throughout the placement. The notebook provides evidence of the candidate’s involvement in classroom preparation, teaching, reflection, and collaboration with both the mentor teacher and college supervisor. It is intended to document the candidate’s developing understanding of classroom organization, instructional planning, student learning, and professional responsibilities at the beginning of the school year.
Mentor teachers and college supervisors may review the notebook throughout the placement to monitor progress, provide feedback, and verify completion of program requirements. Candidates are encouraged to maintain the notebook carefully, organize materials clearly, and include reflections that demonstrate meaningful engagement with the experience.
The purpose of the interview is to establish contact with the mentor teacher before the experience. It is an opportunity to share and gather information, to begin getting acquainted, and to schedule time to connect before you report for duty in August. The teacher will have already received information about your placement and a copy of the Pre-Session Student Teaching syllabus and will be expecting your call. This interview may be completed in person or by phone after the Orientation. An in-person interview at the school site is preferred, if possible.
This signed interview form must be submitted to the Director of Field Experience, Nicole Nunes-Smith.
This verifies completion of a phone or in-person interview with the mentor teacher for the Pre-Session Student Teaching placement.
The Verification of Completion of Pre-Session Student Teaching form is used to confirm that teacher candidates have successfully completed the required 15 days of Pre-Session Student Teaching and submitted all required notebook materials.
The form includes placement information, a checklist of required notebook artifacts, and verification that all evaluations and signatures from the teacher candidate, mentor teacher, college supervisor, and Director of Field Experience have been completed. Some starred items will be kept in the candidate’s permanent department file.
Please complete this evaluation at the conclusion of your pre-session student teaching placement. Evaluate the following components of your experience using the rating scale provided. This evaluation is confidential. Do not put your name or the name of the school where you completed pre-session on the evaluation form.
Evaluation forms to be used to measure growth toward mastery of the TPEs during the Pre-Session experience. These are the same format as the evaluations used during short-term lab placements but need only be completed once at the end of the 15 days. Candidates are responsible for giving the evaluation form to their mentor teacher a few days prior to the close of the experience so he/she will have time to complete it. Candidates also complete a self-evaluation using the evaluation form, and the college supervisor will complete an evaluation form as well.
At the close of the experience, the candidate, mentor teacher, and college supervisor meet together to go over the evaluations and discuss the candidate's experience, progress, and areas of focus for continued growth toward achieving their teaching credential. The college supervisor may join the meeting through Zoom, FaceTime, or by speaker phone.
The evaluations include a measure of the TPEs and subject-specific content standards relevant to the candidate's credential area. Be sure that evaluations are signed and dated by both the candidate and mentor teacher and placed in the candidate's PSST notebook.
In your notebook, there are two TPE evaluation forms provided. You will need to print one more. When you submit your folder to your college supervisor, all five TPE evaluation forms need to be completed and signed by you, your mentor teacher, and college supervisor.
