CalTPA

Effective August 26, 2025, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) is implementing important changes to the CalTPA performance assessment for Multiple Subject (MS) candidates only.

These changes are part of statewide updates under Senate Bill 488, which eliminates the RICA exam and embeds literacy assessment directly into the CalTPA.

What's Changing?

Starting with the 2025–2026 academic year, CalTPA Cycles will be fixed by content area for MS candidates:

Cycle 1 = Math
- Focus: Learning about students and planning a standards-based math lesson
Cycle 2 = Literacy (ELA)
- Focus: Assessment-driven ELA instruction over multiple lessons

🛑 You will no longer be allowed to choose which cycle is math or ELA.

📆 These changes apply to CalTPA submissions beginning August 26, 2025.

The New Methods Structure for Multiple Subjects

EDUC 345 Teaching Math in the Elementary School — now offered Fall quarters
EDUC 353 Teaching English Language Arts I — now offered Winter quarters
EDUC 491 CalTPA Cycle 1 — remains the same, offered Winter quarters
EDUC 492 CalTPA Cycle 2 — remains the same, offered each quarter during Full-Time Student Teaching (FTST)

Students Who Took EDUC 345 & 353

If you took EDUC 345 & 353 during the 2023-2025 school years and have not registered for CalTPA I or II, DO NOT REGISTER UNTIL 26 AUGUST 2025.

If you took EDUC 345 & 353 during the 2023-2025 school years, have registered for CalTPA I and/or II, and have passed CalTPA I, see Dr. P immediately.

If you took EDUC 345 & 353 during the 2023-2025 school years, have registered for CalTPA I and/or II, but have not submitted CalTPA I or II exam, see Dr. P immediately.
