NE - Yr 6 . Whaea Saf (Safron Witika) was able to consistently deliver a quality programme in the classrooms each week. Guided by TKI Te Reo Māori in English Medium Schools Level 1. This has been aimed towards setting up the ākonga and staff with learnings they have online access to reinforce throughout the week.
Every Team has continued to have a mihi and karakia in the daily routines or as part of the various Team Assemblies and gatherings that happen throughout each week. We have continued developing several digital artefacts to support the delivery of this programme.
2024 focused on refining the planning and learning continuum for this area. 2024 planning focused on Phonological awareness/knowledge guided by TKI Te Reo Māori in English Medium Schools Level 1.
Yr 7/8 classes - Whaea Saf is responsible for the delivery of this programme. Our students can confidently mihi and have an understanding of the Tikanga around Mihi. Ākonga are expected in Year 7 and 8 to do their own rāngahau and deliver their own personal pepeha utilising the generic one as a template for guidance.
Schoolwide waiata - We have continued to build a repertoire of waiata that the whole school can sing confidently. This has included going back over waiata and reinforcing the meanings and whakapapa of waiata. Giving the ākonga a deep, rich and meaningful understanding of what they are singing about and being able to personally connect with the waiata. This is an area that we will continue to grow and develop both in the classrooms and at School Assemblies. Our Rangatahi leader (Manaia Laing) led with confidence in this space.
'Learn Create and Share'
It has been great to see classes and the various shared learning spaces including an element of Tikanga and Te reo Māori - Karakia and Mihimihi have become a part of 'the way' and continue to happen daily. There has been continued and thoughtful attention being given to our school 'Values' having an associated tagline in Te Reo Māori, and our various weekly korero are frequently delivered in Māori. This year our major theme was 'Keep it Real' Tika, Pono, Aroha.
Our Senior 2024 Kapa Haka Roopu "Manaia-ki-te-Rangi", Middle school roopu "Pounamu" and our Junior's "Te Ahorangi" have all been mentored by Whaea Saf this year.
Manaia-ki-te-Rangi participated in the 2024 Kōtuku Festival which was hosted at Ruapotaka Marae in Term 4. Both roopu have been a part of a variety of events this year including Ellerslie Retirement Home, sharing waiata with staff during their recovery, and performed during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. These two groups have worked and trained hard this year, we are so proud of the ākonga involved. Dedication and commitment has been key to the success of these students. Its the passion and fire they hold for performing Arts and we are so happy that Kapahaka has been the vessel to deliver this outlet for our students. It would be great to see more of our Prefects and School Leaders be part of this Roopu along with our Rangatahi.
This group prepared and performed in the Junior Prize Giving and were amazing!! There are a huge number of children in this area of the school who want to participate in Kapa Haka. It is always wonderful to see the ihi and wehi from the students within this group. This year gave great insight for kaiako as these ākonga stepped up and it's exciting to see what is in store in the coming years for these students' continuing their kapahaka journey within Pt England School. This is an important space to see Emerging leaders, the upholding of Tikanga, and then us as a kura being consistent and embedding basic etiquette learnt in Kapahaka and then transferring this into each of the classroom wherever possible and appropriate.

Year changes for groups in 2024
-Juniors yr 2/3/4
-Middle School yr5/6
-Senior School yr7/8
An update of the Maori Site and making learning both visible and rewindable is a valued resource that supports this - this is ongoing as new Waiata and learnings are introduced and goes hand in hand with planning.
Ongoing development and refining of the Planning for Māori for each year level.
Reactivate the Tataiako Roopu to drive things Māori across the school.
Both groups having the opportunity to perform for their whanau during the year.
Have a Whanau Hui 2025 to let whanau know what's going on. Also, have Kapahaka Whanau Hui to create a more inclusive approach not only for Māori but for all that are involved and participate throughout the year. This would also bring in more support and whanau interaction.
