Watch the video below to learn about Word Answer questions for polling in Top Hat. Written step-by-step instructions are listed below as well.
1. Select "Word Answer" from the list of question types in the first column.
2. Add a title to your question in the "Title" field. This will help you find your question later.
3. Type your word answer question in the "Question" field. You may also add an image from your computer by choosing "Attach Image".
4. If you would like to provide more than one possible response, click on "Add an answer". This is useful when answers could be slightly varied or when there are multiple correct answers.
5. Type the correct answer in the "Correct Answer" field. Include only one correct answer per field. "Add an answer" instead of providing a list within one correct answer.
Check the "Correct answers are case sensitive" box if capitalization alters the correctness of the response. Remember that students might not capitalize words without being prompted.
6. Check the "Assign grades" box in the bottom left corner if you'd like to capture your students' scores. If your goal is to simply get a feel for where the whole class is without knowing who answered in which way, then leave this box unchecked.
Selecting "Assign grades" will require you to determine how many points each question is worth. Edit the "Correctness" and "Participation" values as needed in this field.
You may also edit these values through your Course Settings, but this will affect every question you create in this course.
7. Scroll down and edit your "Present Options" as desired. A breakdown of each setting is below.
The "Timer" checkbox allows you to put a time limit on how long students may answer. Make sure you change the seconds to the time you wish to give students.
The "Group question" checkbox allows you to assign this question to a group of students.
Note that "Anonymous answers" cannot be enabled further down if this option is selected.
8. Scroll down and edit your "Assign Options" as desired. These options provide feedback to students when they answer your questions.
Choose the "Hint for incorrect response" checkbox to provide feedback if your students get this question wrong. Type the feedback you would like to give in the "Write a hint..." field.
Choose the "Explanation for correct response" checkbox to provide follow-up information if your students get this question right. Type the feedback in the "Write an explanation..." field.
9. Scroll down and edit your "Advanced Options" as desired. This will allow you to survey your students anonymously.
Choose the "Anonymous answers" checkbox to keep your students' identities hidden from you in the results.
You cannot edit this after the question is created. This will not allow you to assign a grade for this question either.
10. Click "Save" in the bottom right corner to save your question. You may cancel creating a question at any time by choosing "Cancel" or pressing your Esc key on your computer.
11. Drag your question into the folder that you want the question to appear in.
You may now Preview, Edit, or Delete your question as needed in Top Hat.
