Readers teach themselves (and others) about the main ideas of their topic. Readers can use their hand and five fingers to stay organized. They do this by pointing to their palm and saying the main idea, then pointing to each finger to give examples that fit with the main idea.
Readers should be independently reading a nonfiction text for at least 20 minutes following the daily focus being explored.
We kindly encourage our young readers to keep their reading life in fiction texts lively, by spending additional time with fiction texts that are just right for them. Students should spend at least 20 minutes reading their fiction books.
Today's Focus: The Problem
As readers, we know in the books that we're reading there will be a problem. From our sneak peak and our reading, we develop an idea of what the problem is going to be and how it is going to be solved. We can make predictions about the problem or predict how it might be solved using text evidence. Today when you're doing reading, stop and think about the problem. Do you know what it is? How might it be solved? What might the problem be?
