Nonfiction readers think about how all the information they are reading fits together, like a puzzle. They read each section thinking: 'Does all of this information fit together? How does it fit together? What’s it mostly about?’
Readers should be independently reading a nonfiction text for at least 20 minutes following the daily focus being explored.
We kindly encourage our young readers to keep their reading life in fiction texts lively, by spending additional time with fiction texts that are just right for them. Students should spend at least 20 minutes reading their fiction books.
Today's Focus: Character Feelings
As readers, one habit we have is tracking characters feelings throughout our reading. We flag certain parts of the text where a characters feelings are changing, and go back at the end of our reading and jot! Remember, we can write an "F" on the post-it when flagging to remember that's a place to jot about feelings later. Today when you're done reading, go back to your flags with an "F" and write a 4-star jot about a character's feelings.
