Talking about literature is an important part of your child's' reading life. While reading have your child respond to questions before, during, and after they read. We are working on getting precise evidence from the text.
Here are some prompts you might consider when reading with your child:
Near the beginning of the book:
- What do you think the book is going to be about? Why?
- How does the author introduce you to the setting, characters, etc.?
- What kind of lead does the author use to begin the story?
- What do you think is going to happen?
Near the middle of the book:
- Was your prediction right? How do you know?
- What are the most important events that have happened so far?
- How can you describe the main character? What made you think that?
- Do any of the characters remind you of someone you know or have met in other books? In your own life? How?
- If you could say something to one of the characters at this point in the text, what would it be?
- What do you think the main character is thinking? Why?
- What is the main character is feeling? How do you know?
- What movie are you making in your mind? What words helped you make that picture?
Near the end of books:
- Did the story end the way you expected? Why or why not?
- How else could the story have ended?
- Does this story remind you of another story you’ve read?
- Does this story remind you of your own life? How so?
- Why do you think the author wrote this story? What was his/her message?
