Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - the process through which people acquire and effectively apply the knowledge and skills to understand emotions, achieve positive goals, have empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
*Remember that "social" has to do with people interacting with others. Because we want to live in strong and healthy communities, it is important that we have strong and healthy social skills.
So much of socializing has to do with using our voices and talking. Sometimes, it's not what we say, but how we say it. How we use our voice has to do with the volume. Volume has to do with how loud or soft a sound is. Volume is measured in decibels.
For this exercise, we are going to use a scale of 1-10. 1 = a super-soft whisper, 5 = a normal voice, and 10 = a scream/yell. For the following situations, please put a number for how loud you would use your voice in the given social situation.
There are no wrong answers, but some responses are more socially acceptable than others.
Example: Talking to a neighbor whose beloved dog recently ran away. 3
Putting an infant to sleep.
Making a phone call to your grandmother.
Trying to get your basketball team hyped up.
Helping a friend who has just fallen broken her/his ankle.
Talking to a friend who is in the same room, but somebody is sleeping in the next room.
Cheering on your favorite team.
Ordering food in a loud restaurant.
Asking somebody to pass the mashed potatoes at dinner.
Speaking to an elderly person who has trouble hearing.
Speaking in front of your class about social skills (because you are an expert).
For Challenge and Fun: Write your own situation, give your answer, and then act it out.
