I am Talla Bodian and this edition we are reviewing Sci-Fi classic Dune by Frank Herbert. The book is set in a futuristic universe where humans have spread throughout the known universe. This universe has no aliens in it, but makes up for it by various types of humans. AI has been banned after a massive war between robots and humans, but super intelligent humans have been bred and trained as bastions of pure logic. Their powers are rivaled only by the Bene Gesserit, an order of women capable of using their powers to read minds, control them, and see into the future. The universe is ruled by an evil emperor whose power is restrained only by a coalition of houses. But despite this rich universe the book takes place mostly on Arakkis, a barely habitable planet with minimal water. You may wonder why the book would be set here but Arakkis is the only source of the universe's most valuable material, a mineral called spice. This potential wealth attracts the noble Atreides house, and their enemies the Harkonnens. Duke Leto, head of the Atreides house has only one child, a son named Paul. Paul’s mother, a Bene Gesserit, taught him the Bene Gesserit ways in the hope that he would become the legendary Kwisatz Haderach a male Bene Gesserit with untold power. As they arrive on Arakkis they are faced with the Fremen, fierce warriors whose children are as dangerous as full grown adults. The Fremen teach the Atreidis much about the desert, including how to avoid megalithic sandworms that can measure Kilometers across. The story gets much better and more interesting but I will leave it here so you can read the book.
