Reading

Learning Ally

Learning Ally is designed to support students who struggle with reading. This will allow you to access electronic books that can be marked up, and read to you by professional readers. This IS a requirement for students with a reading deficit. We will discuss this at your next IEP meeting. The power of listening to a professional reader, will help you learn to love reading again.

To help you teach or learn during this challenging time, we are providing free online resources for reading, ideas for teaching reading at home, parent lesson plans, and struggling reader strategies to help all readers get into good books:

How to Dissect a Story

Understanding what you have read can be a challenge. When you read, you need to think actively. This means, you don't just hear or read the words, but you attempt to make connections to story by activating prior knowledge, identifying characters, plot, conflict and setting. This can be a lot to internalize. So, we've created (Thanks Jane), this graphical organizer to help you identify the parts of the story and to have notes that you can use to study and reflect with.

Example of a Disected Story

Above is a video example of a story dissection. You'll want o use this document as you read. Take time to identify parts of the story and complete as many boxes as you can. You might need to do the reading twice.
