What is Blended Learning?

Blended Learning is a educational buzzword that you have probably heard over and over again. This course will answer the question, What is Blended Learning? You will be provided resources and strategies to create your own blended learning lesson.

Following the completion of this course, you will be awarded the Blended Learning Badge and 10 points.

Before the Lesson:

Google Education apps are a great way to help facilitate the work in a blended learning environment. Before the lesson begins, it is a good idea to review some key concepts and many download the cheat sheets for each app. They can be found by clicking in the link to the right.

Session 1- What is Blended Learning?

Blended Learning is an educational model where teaching and learning has 3 different components.

1. Part of the learning takes place at home or online

2. Part of the learning takes place at school

3. The time where the new learning can be unpacked in by both the teacher and the student.

This is an overly simplified definition of blended learning, but it creates a picture of how teaching and learning is not isolated to the 4 walls of a classroom. In addition, direct instruction is no longer the only method of teaching.

The resources below will help create a clearly defined meaning of blended learning. When you have finished reviewing the following sources, complete section 1 of the What is Blended Learning ? worksheet.


Session 2- The 7 Models of a Blended Learning Environment?

The article shows you 7 different models of Blended Learning Instruction.

Reflect on your own lessons.

  • What models have you used?
  • What model are you most comfortable using
  • What model would you like to try using in the future?
  • Are you using more Blended Learning or Tech Integration
  • What Google tools cold you use with these models.

Once you have read the article and learned about the 7 models of blended learning, complete section 2 of the, "What is Blended Learning ?" worksheet


Reflect on old lesson- Are you truly doing a blended learning classroom- Blended learning or tech integration.

Session 3- Creating your own Blended Learning Lesson or Lessons.

To complete this coursework and earn the Blended Learning Badge, your assignment will be to create a lesson(s) using 3 of the blended learning models.

1. Create your lesson or lessons. Be sure to add in the resources you used, including all of the online tools, videos, articles, and webinars. Be sure that Google Classroom is the tool that you used to facilitate the online part of a blended learning classroom.

2. Complete Section 3 of the, "What is Blended Learning ?" worksheet.

Submit the, "What is Blended Learning ?" worksheet and evidence of the lesson to claim this badge. You can submit a picture, video or screen shots of the lesson as artifacts.
