Choose the right curriculum and the events
This week we are sharing our annual event document that includes the details for the main events we will be preparing our students at PianoAlpharetta during the 2020-2021 school year (there will be a separate email as well). Although all the practical information is included in that document, we would like to also provide information on how to choose the appropriate events to participate.
PIANOALPHARETTA 2020-2021 EVENTS
One of the main reasons that our students choose to become students at PianoAlpharetta is the opportunities we provide for our students to participate at different events. Our teachers are certified and experienced to teach internationally recognized certification programs and members of national organizations that organize countless judged events, performances and competitions. At PianoAlpharetta, we also go beyond the ‘two-times-a-year formal recitals’ and create many more opportunities for our students to perform and have fun at the same time.
Our students and their families have different reasons to participate at music events such as helping admission for college entry, building resume if they are considering a professional music route and simply staying motivated.
Below you can find the types of music events:
*These events are on the schedule for the year however they will be altered due to the pandemic.
Certification programs
The two main certification programs we participate at PianoAlpharetta are RCM and ABRSM. These rigorous programs follow detailed curriculums while students prepare multiple pieces, technical exercises and additionally work on sight-reading, ear-training and music theory. These programs start when the students are at an intermediate level.
Participation is recommended for students who would:
plan to pursue music education for many years
keep a consistent practice routine
be interested in learning different aspects of music
Judged events
Different national music teachers organizations put together yearly programs with events to offer their members to enter their students. Students prepare required pieces from particular syllabi to perform for one judge and receive judge comment sheets along with a certificate. Some of these events provide opportunities that students accumulate points to earn cups over years. In any circumstance, it is a great motivation for students to receive approval and opinions/suggestions on their improvement from a music teacher other than their own teachers. These events start when the students are at a later-beginning level and up.
Participation is recommended for students would:
commit to a consistent practice routine
understand that increased practice will be necessary heading up to the event
Competitions
Competition opportunities pop up several times a year from different sources. While some of them reward winners with money prizes, others provide scholarships. These programs start when the students are at an early-advanced level and up.
Participation is recommended for students would:
plan to pursue music education for many years
keep a consistent practice routine
expect that teachers will focus on few pieces for long periods of times
understand that results might be losing or winning
Theory exams
Some judged events, competitions and certification programs require students that they pass theory exams in order to qualify to participate and receive certifications.
Recitals
At PianoAlpharetta, we organize formal recitals, one in November and another in April. More than 300 students get to perform at their teachers’ recital time and get to share their improvement with friends and family.
Participation is recommended for everyone!
Pop-up performances
In the past we organized halloween, circus, holiday and Disney themed recitals as well as benefit concerts supporting UNICEF and composition contests. We organize fun, themed performances to take the pressure off of our students. We encourage all students to participate in these events with their choice of pieces.
Participation is recommended for everyone!
No-events at all
It is our principle to accept all of our students as they are and hear their expectations with no judgement. If they prefer not to participate in any events, our teachers will prepare their lessons plans accordingly.
It is important to remember that the best motivation is to feel capable and feeling recognized for our capabilities. All the events above create space for these emotions, not only for students but their parents as well.
