Ask the right questions after the music lessons
In our previous email, we talked about providing space for our children to process different feelings regarding music lessons and practice. In order to provide this space, we need to first understand their feelings.
WHAT TO ASK after a piano lesson instead of “HOW WAS YOUR LESSON?”
Guide your pianists to notice/remember the fun parts of the lesson.
Take the opportunity to emphasize that it is ok to struggle and communicate that ‘hard’ things are not impossible. They simply take longer time. Give them examples of challenges from your life.
Encourage your pianists to teach you a concept as they learn the best when they get a chance to teach it themselves.
Ask your pianists to have a list of songs they like playing. It is not all about learning new songs! Remember to share with them your favorite ones to listen!
Help your pianists remember strategies that helped them at the lesson so they can use those strategies during home practice.
Let them know that it is ok to ask questions and you would be happy to help.
Kindly remind that they should find you if they have any questions during home practice so you can contact their teachers. For the times you are not present, they should have a little notebook for practice questions so when you are home, you can go through these questions with them.
May you know you are making a difference, even if your child never tells you themselves.

We would be more than happy to answer any questions and provide more specific consultancy if needed.
