Marshals on Holes 5-13
Parking for Marshals on holes 5-13 will be in Lot TV 2 located at SUNY Farmingdale - 2350 NY-110, Farmingdale, NY 11735
There will be am accessible walk-gate located right by hole 9 at Bethpage Black.
Marshals should check-in with their Hole Captain near the teeing ground of their assigned hole.
If you are volunteering for the first shift, your Hole Captain will distribute Inside the Ropes credentials at your check-in area. Marshals volunteering in the afternoon will also check-in at a designated area and will be told which Marshal they will replace.
When you get to your assigned spot, the Marshal going off-duty will give you the Inside the Ropes access credential and they will leave the post. If you are assigned to the last shift, your Hole Captain will collect all the Inside the Ropes access credentials and return them to Volunteer Headquarters. All Inside the Ropes access credentials must be accounted for at the end of each day.
The success of the Marshal program is contingent on all Volunteers reporting on time for their shift. However, it is imperative to notify your Hole Captain if you are unable to volunteer for your shift due to an emergency.
Marshals are only permitted to be inside the ropes during their assigned shift. Marshals will not be allowed to remain inside the ropes outside of their scheduled hours. If you would like to spectate, you will need to do so outside of the rope line.
As a Marshal Volunteer, you will be outside for a long period of time. Please be prepared for any type of weather conditions. You and the Marshals may bring a rain suit, umbrella, or small chair to help you perform your assignment.
Comfortable shoes are a must! Rubber soled shoes are recommended - metal spiked golf shoes are NOT allowed. Remember whatever items you bring with you, you must carry for the entire day. Please encourage your fellow Marshals to do the same.
There will be several Marketplaces and Water Stations dispersed throughout the course, and you are able to stop there and grab something to eat and drink before or after your shift. Also, when in uniform, you may bring additional bottled water with you through the gates.
Beverages on the tee boxes are for Players, Caddies, Standard Bearers, and Walking Scorers ONLY. There are also designated coolers on specific holes strictly for Media.
Always stand facing the gallery as much as possible. This makes it easier to make eye contact and to talk with the gallery. Anticipate the situations and inform the people of coming actions.
Remember you are dealing with fellow golfers that understand the etiquette of the game. You should appeal to the sportsmanship of spectators.
The commands to a gallery should be clear and concise. Types of commands to use with the gallery are:
“Stop, Please” – while raising your arms to stop moving spectators.
“Quiet, Please” – to quiet spectators as players are about to play their shot.
“Fore on the right (or left)” – if a ball is heading outside the ropes and toward the gallery.
Marshals should set a good example for spectators by staying quiet and still when a player is preparing for a stroke. Never stand directly behind the players’ line of play. If you are caught in this position, stand still.
Spectators and Volunteers are permitted to use mobile devices/cellular phones at the Ryder Cup within the following parameters:
Set device to silent or vibrate, including but not limited to, ringer and notifications/alerts.
Camera flash and shutter noise turned off.
Text, email, and social posting, etc. is allowed on the golf course at any location providing players are not in position about to play their shots.
On some holes, Marshals will be charged with the responsibility of operating a crosswalk which spectators are allowed to cross. These areas will be marked by large signs affixed to posts on either side of the fairway and on the fairway by white lines. Marshals are to control access to these zones by using rope lines attached to the posts at each side of the fairway.
Spectators should not be allowed to enter in these areas until the players have passed by the zone on their progress toward the green. When the rope-gates are opened, Marshals must police the crossing and see to it that spectators stay within the confines of the white lines of the crosswalk. Timing the closing of the crosswalk is imperative as to not delay play.
Make sure the entrance gates on the tees and exit gates off the greens are clear before the cplayers use them. The Marshals are expected to clear a path and escort players from the green to the next tee. This will require a coordinated effort with the Marshals on the next teeing ground.
It is especially important to watch for shots coming into your area. If the ball goes beyond the ropes, protect it from being trampled by the spectators. If the ball is moved by you or the gallery, tell the player. Marshals should watch for balls going into the rough or water hazards. You may be called upon to help determine the spot where the ball entered the hazard. However, under no circumstances should a Marshal offer any advice.
When you wish to form a line without a rope, as will be necessary when a ball goes beyond the fixed ropes, stand on the line and hold out your arms to indicate the line. It is important to have the gallery moved and the area ready for play by the time the player gets to his ball.
Please maintain the ropes and stakes as they are taken down or become slack during play. Before you hammer a stake back into place, please look around to see that no players in your area are getting ready to play their stroke. Hole Captains will be equipped with a hammer on each hole.
Face the gallery and kneel as much as possible. Only players, caddies, PGA Rules Officials, and authorized grounds personnel are allowed on the green.
All spectators are expected to remain silent and motionless while a player is about to play his stroke, this is particularly critical around greens.
The PGA Rules Committee has personnel roving the golf course. Please become acquainted with the Rules Official in your area. In case of any ruling or emergency they should be involved.
The PGA Rules Committee will handle the suspension of play and removal of the players from the golf course. There will be carts stationed around the golf course for player evacuation. If play is suspended the PGA Rules Committee Official in your area will be in charge.
You may be requested to assist the Player Evacuation Committee to help guide players to the Evacuation Zone. Further instructions will be given to you at the time of suspension.
Arrive at your hole 30 minutes prior to your assignment. Stop by Volunteer Headquarters to pick up your radio and your hole's Marshal Bag (containing the Inside the Ropes credentials, hammer, and flag) and return it at the end of each day.
ALL CAPTAINS ARE REQUIRED TO ROTATE YOUR MARSHALS EVERY FORTY-FIVE MINUTES. Utilize the positions marked on your hole layout sheet to assign Marshals and begin the rotations. Suggestions are to number the “M’s".
Marshals should not be inside the ropes on any other hole unless specifically asked to do so by the Marshal Chairman or a PGA Rules Official.
If you need to take out a stake, you may need to use the hammer. Try to hammer the stake back into its original hole.
You should acquaint yourself with the PGA Rules Official on your hole. If you need any help, contact that individual or your Area Captain.
