Area Captains are the troubleshooters and problem solvers responsible for supporting the Hole Captains and Marshals as needed. While the Hole Captains have a detailed understanding of their specific hole, the Area Captains have an understanding of all of the holes in their area and can provide guidance, assistance, and support.
Area Captains assigned to any of the 3 Areas will be responsible for communicating with Hole Captains and Marshals to make sure play goes through those holes without incident.
FOUR THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW AS AN AREA CAPTAIN
Area Captains are responsible for knowing all aspects of the Marshal Committee, including responsibilities of both the Marshals and the Hole Captains. If any of the Marshals OR Hole Captains are not performing their responsibilities as described in our training meetings, the Area Captains will be responsible for politely advising them on how they can improve.
Real life examples include…
If the contestants’ tee shots are continuously landing 50 yards beyond a fairway Marshal, the Area Captain and/or the Hole Captain will advise the Marshal to move further down the rope line in order to locate the balls more easily.
If a Marshal is watching golf instead of watching the gallery, the Area Captain and/or the Hole Captain will advise the Marshal to stand facing the crowd in order to better monitor their actions.
If the gallery is too close to play, the Area Captain and Hole Captain will help the PGA to re-evaluate the rope/stake plan and will make adjustments “on-the-spot” as necessary.
If a Marshal notifies an Area Captain that they have been in the same position for their entire shift, the Area Captain will remind the Hole Captain to rotate their Marshals, and will find out why this was not occurring. Perhaps the Hole Captain was overwhelmed with other issues on the hole that the Area Captain can help address to prevent this from occurring in the future.
Area Captains will also be responsible for monitoring the crowd movement and flow. If a problem arises on a hole, they will help the Hole Captain to adjust the Marshals to varying locations in an effort to curb the problem.
If this is not possible, Area Captains will help out by acting as a Marshal on that hole and radioing to the Marshal Committee Co-Chairs and the other Area Captains for extra assistance.
If an Area Captain hears a call for help from another Area Captain, they may be able to assist them by…
Going to the scene of the problem and acting as a Marshal in order to improve the situation.
Moving Marshals from a place they know is over-staffed to the place where extra help is needed.
Area Captains are asked to help with making sure there are no distractions around the course, such as noise from concession stands, loud doors on nearby restrooms, etc. If problems like these arise, Area Captains will be asked to help the Marshal Co-Chairs and The PGA of America Staff to solve the problems.
One Area Captain will always be present at the Marshals Desk located in Volunteer Headquarters.
In the morning, this Area Captain will be responsible for checking in the morning Hole Captains as they report for duty on their hole. The Area Captain will confirm that each Hole Captain has received the proper bag, and is given a radio.
The Area Captain should do a ‘radio test’ with each Hole Captain to confirm that the radio is working, and that the Hole Captain is using it properly. If a hole has not yet had a Hole Captain report for duty, and the Marshal start time on that hole is approaching, the Area Captain should contact the Hole Captains assigned to that hole to confirm that someone will be present.
Throughout the day, the Area Captain at the Marshal Desk may be asked by Hole Captains to contact Marshals that did not show up for their shifts to see if they are on their way.
At the end of the day, this Area Captain will confirm that all the bags and radios have been returned to the desk, and that the radios are charging properly.
All Area Captains will check-in for their shifts at the Marshal Desk located in Volunteer Headquarters. From this location, Area Captains will pick up their needed radios, golf carts, and receive their assignment for the day from the Committee Co-Chairs.
Once checked in for their shift, Area Captains should go to their assigned location. If assigned to the Marshal Desk, the Area Captain would prepare for the arrival of the Hole Captains. If assigned on-course, the Area Captain should make their rounds and visit the Hole Captains on-duty.
WE ARE SO EXCITED "FORE" YOU TO BE AN AREA CAPTAIN!
