Academic Integrity

The Office of International Student and Scholar Services is a resource for international students struggling with US educational style, language, cultural adaptation or dealing with additional stress that may impact academic performance. OISSS can serve as a resource for faculty and students alike when students display challenges adhering to the academic integrity standards we have in the United States. Please contact us at 503-725-4094 or by email at oia@pdx.edu.

Academic Success & Retention

International students and scholars must remain in compliance with the terms of their visas if they wish to continue at PSU and maintain a good immigration record. The complexity of the regulations make it important that students and faculty are aware of the basics and know to contact an immigration advisor with any questions before making decisions that could impact their immigration status. Learn more about remaining in valid status, as well as all of the services our office provides international students at https://www.pdx.edu/international-students/visa-status-f-1-j-1

Some international students are financially sponsored by their home government, corporation or university.  In those instances, the student might require a special letter periodically or be asked to provide additional information to their sponsor.  In addition, sponsored students have restrictions with online coursework and changing their academic plan.  If a sponsored student has a question about a letter or if a class will be permitted under their sponsorship, please contact the Sponsored Student Program Administrator, Krista Kennedy at krista5@pdx.edu

Classroom Presentations & Trainings

Many academic departments incorporate internships and other practical experience into their curricula.  It is important to note that international students require prior authorization to participate in such experiences, whether they are paid or volunteer. Without it they may violate their immigration status and face very difficult circumstances that jeopardize their ability to study in the United States. OISSS holds several workshops each term to explain Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and post-degree Optional Practical Training (OPT) in their fields of study. To request more information or to inquire about a presentation please contact your OISSS Departmental Liaison found at https://www.pdx.edu/international-students/departmental-liaisons.

Faculty Partnerships with Student Organizations & Programs

The Office of International Student and Scholar Services strives to provide the best possible support to the international students and scholars who choose to study and work at Portland State University.  In an effort to build close relationships with those academic departments and service units that interact most with our international student population, we have established Departmental Liaisons.  The Departmental Liaisons work closely with those units on campus to 1) clarify what we do; 2) learn where challenges exist for international students as well as for faculty and staff, and 3) work with units to alleviate those challenges to the best of our ability. In addition, we intend for points of potential collaboration to increase the success of international students at Portland State. Resources for Students in Distress

Studying abroad can be a very challenging experience that can lead to signs of emotional distress. Language barriers and cultural differences may make it difficult for international students to be forthcoming about their struggles. Because full time enrollment is a requirement of their visa status, it is essential that students having challenges meet with an advisor in OISSS to receive guidance and support to ensure they maintain their immigration status.  Our immigration and student life advisors work closely with SHAC and other units on campus to ensure students receive the support they need.   Find more information at https://www.pdx.edu/international-students/advising-services

Interpersonal Violence & Responsible Employee Information

The Office of International Student and Scholar Services has an International Student Life Advisor who is also a certified Confidential Interpersonal Violence advocate (IPV). Confidential IPV advocates provide assistance to students who experience interpersonal violence, such as sexual harassment, sexual assault, stalking, or domestic/dating violence. Confidential advocates can keep students’ information secret and inform on various reporting options. Yoko Honda may be contacted at hondy@pdx.edu.

Student Involvement & Employment Opportunities

International students need prior authorization from an International Student Advisor before they may work on campus. The Office of International Student and Scholar Services provides the documentation necessary to obtain a social security number and guidance to help ensure they follow work regulations related to their visa status. Find more information at https://www.pdx.edu/international-students/employment

The ISSS International Student Life team plans events and workshops each term to facilitate student engagement at PSU, exploration of the city and the natural wonders Oregon has to offer.  Find a calendar of events and subscribe to a newsletter for details on how to participate!
