World Languages
The languages taught in Oregon schools include: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish.
Students who plan to teach a World Language at any level should complete a bachelor's degree in that language, or hold an appropriate degree from a country of the target language that is equivalent to a BA in the US.
Alternatively, students could a degree in other disciplines, and include a minimum of 40 quarter credits that apply towards major requirements in one world language.
Highly Recommended for World Languages
A 3.00 GPA or better in the last 40 of the language related credits earned.
An oral proficiency rating of advanced low or higher on the ACTFL scale in French, German, Spanish, Japanese, or Russian
Recommended for Foreign Languages
Upper division (300-400 level) credits in the chosen language
Time spent in a relevant program abroad
As many of the following as possible: phonetics, general linguistics, applied linguistics, culture and civilization, practicum, and methods of teaching foreign languages
For Japanese language, training in Japanese teaching methods
When ready to apply to GTEP, students should request a recommendation form from the faculty advisor:
