Doctoral Program Director Selection Process

Term of Appointment: 3 years
1. Distribution of the Doctoral Program Director role description to all faculty members who may nominate themselves (if eligible; see criteria) or another eligible faculty member, who would provide the required documents.
Criteria for eligibility: The candidate will be a tenured faculty member, holding a doctorate, whom possesses a combination of background, research expertise, and experiences in a doctoral program (COE or within another School of Education in another 4-year institution), including (but not limited to):
Teaching doctoral core courses and/or department-based doctoral specialty courses;
Advising doctoral students as program and/or dissertation advisor, particularly acting as head advisor for a student’s completed dissertation;
Serving on doctoral students’ committees (i.e., core comprehensive examination paper, dissertation proposal, and dissertation committees);
Serving in doctoral policy or admissions processes (e.g., Doctoral Program Faculty [DPF], reviewing applicants’ files and/or interviewing them);
Demonstrating other relevant background, research expertise, and experiences.
2. Interested candidates will submit required materials to the Doctoral Program Faculty.
Required materials:
Curriculum Vitae
A letter of interest describing and providing examples of the fit between the applicants background, research expertise, and experience and the role of Doctoral Program Director; and
Commentary regarding contributions the applicant wants to make to the welfare of the program and its students with an appropriate rationale.
3. The Doctoral Program Faculty will forward to the Dean the name(s) of candidates whom the DPF finds acceptable for the Dean’s final selection and appointment, in consultation with the candidate’s Department Chair. Should a member of the DPF be applying for the Doctoral Program Director position, that person would not take part in the DPF’s deliberations and recommendation.
