Studio Cleanup Requirements & Penalties

Cleaning Your Workspace and Studio

Damage/Cleaning Charge

Each student registered in a studio class (with the exception of ARCH 120) is assigned a workstation composed of a desk, chair and cabinet.  At the end of each term, your work station must be returned in the same condition as it was when you were assigned it.  All students in a studio are responsible for cleanup of the communal areas in the studio and review spaces used by your group.  Please be advised that there are absolutely no exceptions to this agreement. A $50 charge will be made to your account at the end of the term for any violations of the studio Code of Conduct.

End of Term Cleanup Procedures

All students must completely clean out their studio space by the deadline during finals week of each term as instructed by School of Architecture faculty and staff.

A set of cleanup procedures and deadlines for each term will be posted and circulated by office staff to each student enrolled in the studio.  If you miss the cleanup deadline, a $50 charge will be made to your account.  There are no exceptions unless pre-approved in writing by the School Director. Instructors and staff will check to confirm that each student has cleaned and returned his/her chair, desk and storage cabinet in good working order. Common spaces, including hallways and all areas of the studio classroom, must also be cleaned.

If a studio area is not properly cleaned, all students in the class risk being charged $50.

Recycling containers and garbage receptacles are provided.  Trash must be neatly bagged and put in the dumpsters.

If you have perfectly good model-making materials over 12x12 inches in size that you don't need, don't throw them away. Please put them neatly in the Materials Cart (aka, Wood Cart), located near the 3rd-floor kitchen. This resource is intended for students to dispose of materials that are still in good condition that other students might be able to use. During the term, if you need materials and prefer not to purchase them, consult the Materials Cart to see if it contains something you can use. Per City of Portland Fire Code, items placed on the Materials Cart may not touch the floor, nor the pipes, surrounding the cart. If there is no space remaining on the cart or items are too large, items must be disposed of, properly. NEVER place blades, nails, screws, paint, glue, or wood containing these items on the Cart. Violators may be subject to a $50 fine.

Students must remove all individual and group projects unless the instructor has tagged the work to be retained for archival purposes. If your instructor asks you to provide your work for the school's archive or display, make sure the work is clearly labeled with your name, your personal email, your class number and instructor, the term, and the year. Bring it to the School office for processing.

The School is not responsible for any personal belongings -- including student projects -- left in the studios or elsewhere in the building.

Please Recycle

PSU promotes and adheres to sustainability principles in every aspect of its operations. The School of Architecture expects students and faculty to reuse materials whenever possible and recycle as often as possible, reducing landfill waste at all times.

Recycling containers are made available throughout the studios and Shattuck Hall. You are asked to make every effort to put recyclable materials into the correct bin and to keep garbage out of recycling bins. Use the Materials Cart to encourage reuse by other students.

Wood is not recyclable, although unpainted, untreated wood may be usable by the wood shop; check with the shop manager, Emma Duehr (edeuhr@pdx.edu).  Painted or stained wood, wood with nails, metal, concrete, and plaster must be taken to the debris bin in the construction yard behind Stott Center for disposal. Again, check with Emma Duehr for instructions regarding how and where to dispose of these construction materials.
