Shakiba Ghaffari, MSc.
Current position: Coordinator, Chemical Institute of Canada.
Biography:
Shakiba is a trained chemist who strives to promote the chemical sciences across Canada. Passionate about chemistry and medicine since Grade 10, Shakiba set the pharmaceutical industry as her career goal. Shakiba received her specialized honours Bachelor of Science degree in pharmaceutical and biological chemistry and her Master of Science in Chemistry, both at York University. Her academic and professional journey has taken her through a variety of research areas, including honeybees, nanoparticles, and drug discovery- all of which broadened her scientific ability and exposed her to different ways of thinking. During the pandemic, she discovered the importance of community involvement, and assumed multiple volunteer positions. In these roles she connected virtually with seniors and children with special needs throughout the lonely days of the pandemic and strengthened her chemistry community by planning an internal conference at York University. She was also elected to the Chemical Institute of Canada Toronto Local Section’s 2022 Executive Committee as their Industrial Liaison, where she led a successful in-person career fair and has since been elected as their 2023 Co-Chair. The accumulation of these non-scientific roles set Shakiba on a new career path of working at a non-profit organization where she focuses her energy on exciting the next generation of chemists and chemical engineers.
