MOLYMPICS
The First Annual Cawthra Molympics was a great molecular success. On October 23, groups of friends gathered to participate in a fun and educational scavenger hunt based on a concept in chemistry. In celebration of Amadeo Avogadro, a chemist who developed the concept of the mole as a quantity in chemistry (6.022 x 10^23), scientists from around the world celebrate his contribution, Teams of 2-3 students put their knowledge and problem-solving skills to the test as they raced to find locations in the school to complete challenges such as bean bag Bohr-Rutherford Models, Mole Egg Hunt, Science Charades, Mole-cular Puns, Gues the Element and TicTac-Mole.
The victorious winners were: Sraddha C., Mannat S. and Rayah I-G.
The TEAM club hosted an engaging, hands-on biology activity. Students explored the structure of DNA, its functions, and the significance of DNA. Through this interactive activity, they were able to recreate DNA molecules by using candy! Students used Twizzlers to make the double-helix structure, used marshmallows that represented nucleotides, and attached them with toothpicks, demonstrating their covalent link with phosphates and sugars. Along with learning about genetics, students had the chance to code with Spheros, programming them through an obstacle course with Block Coding. What a great way to learn new things whilst having fun!
Cawthra Grad Panel
The science department and STEAM Club welcomed seven Cawthra grads to provide an information session for our senior students interested in pursuing STEM fields. Our graduates shared words of wisdom and offered insight in developing strategies to stay focused in high school, preparing for applications and what to expect in university.
