Designing a wind turbine to generate as much electrical power as possible, competing in the biodiversity challenge, building a circuit to harness renewable energy, solving an unsolvable crime, constructing a pan flute using the laws of physics, winning the Amazing Race... does this sound exciting? This year over 195 Cawthra students took up the challenge and competed in the 3rd Annual Cawthra Science Olympics!
The Science Olympiad is an interactive science competition open to any Cawthra Park Secondary School student. Teams of students competed in eleven events developed by Cawthra science teachers. Students were given a series of challenges that allowed them to apply what they’ve learned in class creatively and innovatively. The Science Olympics allowed every student to use their strengths. Students formed cross-grade teams ranging from 12 to 14 students and collaborated for several weeks as they prepared for the big day. In addition to crunching numbers, mixing chemicals, massing balloons, and rhyming off interesting facts, students built their team spirit and got to know each other.
The highlight of the day was the VOICE Battle. For this challenge participants were asked to create a remix of an existing song, using specific scientific vocabulary.
A special congratulations to Team2: SPLICE SPLICE BABYfor winning Bonze, Team10 THE BUNSEN BURNOUTS for winning silver, and Team13 ALUMINUMATERS for winning the coveted title of 2024 Cawthra Science Olympics Champions and gold medals.
Congratulations go to all students for participating in a successful day of science exploration at Cawthra. After eleven events and 5 hours of competition, the most successful team was still undecided. It all came down to the final Amazing Race relay. In this final event all teams competed in a series of mini-events and whichever team crossed the finish line first would likely be the team to claim Cawthra’s Science Olympics Trophy.
