Dual enrolled classes mean that you get BOTH college credit and high school credit for the same class. When dual enrolled you have two GPAs - a high school GPA and a college GPA. The grade you get for a dual enrolled course is weighted at the high school and averages in with your high school GPA. With the first dual enrolled course that you take your college GPA begins. The college GPA is not weighted, and remains separate from your high school GPA. Take ALL dual enrolled courses seriously because bad grades could have ramifications for college financial aid. Students attending the Governor's School are dual enrolled.
The following courses are being offered as dual enrolled courses at PCHS. There are minimum high school GPA requirements for these courses - 2.0 for all CTE courses and 3.0 for all other courses. Some courses also have other requirements or prerequisites. The information in bold is what the class equivalent is at NRCC.

To be dual enrolled, you must have an NRCC application on file and a parent signature on file. This only needs to be done once - so if you completed an application for another NRCC/dual enrollment class, you do not need to do it again. If you don't know if you have already completed an application, contact one of your Career Coaches and they can look it up: Mrs. Kleppin kkleppin@pcva.us or Mrs. Weightman epweightman@pcva.us. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PRINT YOUR APPLICATION, but you do need to have a parent signature on file (see below).
STEP ONE: CREATE A VCCS ACCOUNT
Go to nr.edu and click APPLY in the upper right corner (if using your phone click on menu to find APPLY); or go to apply.vccs.edu. Click NEW USER and SIGN UP WITH EMAIL (you will need to be able to retrieve a secure code from the email address that you use). In this step you will create a username and password which is only used for the application process. This is NOT your NRCC username and password. It is just your NRCC application username and password used if you have to make a change to your application. You will get your NRCC username and password at the end of the application process - see info below about the "yellow box."
STEP TWO: APPLY TO NRCC
You need to click New River Community College and complete that application. You will run through about 8-9 screens. At the end you will get a yellow box with your SIS# (also called an EMPL ID), your NRCC username and a temporary NRCC password. It's recommended that you take a picture of the yellow box, which contains your student number, username and temporary password, and record that information in a secure location. This password is temporary and will require you to change it the first time you access your NRCC account.
The Parent Signature Form can be completed online and sent to Admissions@nr.edu or printed and mailed to New River Community College, Admissions Office, 5251 College Drive, Dublin, VA 24084. It can also be given to your Career Coach at PCHS. The EMPL ID entered on the second line is your 7-digit SIS# that was generated when you submitted your NRCC application.
Your PCHS Career Coaches, Ms. Kleppin (kkleppin@pcva.us) or Ms. Weightman (epweightman@pcva.us), can help you with these steps if you have any questions. You can reach them through REMIND (see codes on the HOME page of this Counseling Site) or via email.
The Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS) is a two-semester college program in which all courses are transferable and satisfy lower-division general education requirements at any Virginia public institution of higher education. The Passport is a component of the UCGS and is, therefore, a subset of courses in the UCGS. The UCGS consists of seven course blocks. To satisfy the UCGS, students are required to complete the appropriate number of courses in each block as described HERE. Student course selection should be carefully considered since the UCGS program is not designed to capture the complexities of individual programs of study at four-year institutions. Students should be advised to take the UCGS course that best suits their intended program of study at the four-year institution.
Students interested in pursuing the UCGS while in high school need to have an NRCC application on file, and submit a signed copy of the INTENT TO COMPLETE UCGS to the School Counseling office. Signed form will be sent to NRCC Admissions upon receipt.
HOW DO I APPLY TO NRCC FOR DUAL ENROLLMENT
If you have already taken ANY dual enrollment class, you do not need to apply again. You are done.
If you have never taken a dual enrollment class, go to NR.EDU and click “APPLY” in the upper right corner.
WHAT EMAIL SHOULD I USE FOR MY NRCC APPLICATION?
On the first screen, where you create your account, use an email that you have access to RIGHT NOW. You have to be able to retrieve a code from that email address to continue. Once you are in the application, when you get to the email question, update it with your personal email (@gmail, @icloud, @yahoo).
I CREATED MY ACCOUNT, AM I DONE?
NO - the NRCC Application is a two-step process.
Step 1: Create your account (1 screen)
Step 2: APPLY to NRCC (9-10 screens)
IS THE USERNAME AND PASSWORD I CREATED ON THE FIRST SCREEN WHEN I CREATED MY ACCOUNT MY NRCC USERNAME AND PASSWORD?
NO. It is just the username and password for your application. It would be used if you have to get in and make a correction to your application. You will get your NRCC username and password after you successfully submit your NRCC application - see reference to the YELLOW BOX below.
DO I NEED TO ENTER A TAX ID OR SSN?
NO. Students don’t have tax IDs. It is not required to enter either a Tax ID or an SSN. You can put a check next to the statement that reads “I do not wish to enter my SSN at this time.” However, if you know your SSN (be certain of this - do not guess) you can enter it now so you won’t have to do it if you plan to attend NRCC after graduation.
WHAT IS MY "EXPECTED COMPLETION DATE?"
List your high school graduation month and year - 06/20##.
WHEN WILL I START CLASSES?
Select the upcoming Fall.
DO I PLAN TO EARN A DEGREE AT NRCC?
NO. Right now you are taking courses through your high school to earn high school and college credit.
HOW DO I CLAIM “DOMICILE?”
Domicile is asking where, and with whom, you live. As a DE student:
Select the parent option if you live with your parent(s)
Select the guardian option if you live with a guardian
ONCE I SUBMIT MY APPLICATION WHAT NEXT?
FIRST: Scroll down the screen and take a picture of the YELLOW BOX which contains your NRCC student number, NRCC username & a temporary password, or record this information somewhere safe.
SECOND: Turn in a Parent Signature form to the School Counseling office - or to either of the PCHS Career Coaches - Mrs. Kleppin or Mrs. Weightman. You will not be enrolled by NRCC without a Parent Signature form on file.

After your photo is submitted, you'll receive information on how/where to pick up your card. NRCC Student ID card submission: https://www.nr.edu/photoid/ You will need your NRCC login information (username and password) to request an ID, if you don't know this information reach out to one of your career coaches (Mrs. Kleppin kkleppin@pcva.us or Mrs. Weightman epweightman@pcva.us) and they can help you. If you got a green NRCC card from them, it's on that!
NOTE: If you are unable to pickup your card from NRCC, the coaches can get it the next time they are on campus - just reach out to them.
