Living with Collective Memories; Commemorating Lived Histories 

Where one family’s stories of migration begin, another family’s journey ends. Endings have been inevitable for some lineages of craft practices or livelihoods in the flux of development. Technologies, creators, or their histories, who were visionary in their times, even for that region… The change in times and societal needs have made many regional designs, arts, buildings, or even people, obsolete! It’s true for many recipes, medicines, other ephemeral practices and entire indigenous communities that have been lost to time. પણ જો કોઈ વસ્તુ અથવા પ્રક્રિયાઓ વર્તમાન મા ઉપયોગી નથી, તો શું તેની ઉપયોગિતા સમાપ્ત થઈ જાય છે? 

Agreed, that we can’t retain everything, and it's a very resource-intensive affair to even preserve the relics of the past. Perhaps, that’s different communities have collected memories together, and recreated narratives of their cultural landscapes or passed them on in more than one form over many centuries. A lived way of preserving the past ... are found in the rooms of a city, doesn’t matter whose is it - શહેરમાં આવી વાર્તાઓને જીવંત કરતા ઘણા ઓરડાઓ છે. અહીં, અમે આવા કેટલાક ઓરડાઓને જીવંત કરી રહ્યા છીએ…hopeful about having a dialogue on collective well being through cultural preservation and creative collaborations. 

જ્યાં એક પરિવારની વાતોની યાત્રા સમાપ્ત થાય છે ત્યાં અન્ય પરિવારની શરૂ થાય છે અને આ જ ક્રમ છે. અમુક કળા-વારસાઓ પ્રગતિ અને આધુનિકતાની દોડમાં ક્યારેક તો સમાપ્ત થઇ જ જતા હોય છે. અમુક સર્જકો જે પોતાના સમયકાળમાં દીર્ઘદૃષ્ટા ગણાતા તેમનું સર્જન પણ કાળગ્રસ્ત થઈ જાય છે. સમયના બદલાવ અને સામાજિક જરૂરિયાતોને અનુલક્ષીને પ્રાદેશિક કલાકારી, પાકશાસ્ત્ર, કારીગરી,કુદરતી ઈલાજ….આ બધું જ નહિ, અમુક વસ્તીઓ પણ વિલીન થઈ ગઈ છે. પણ, વિચાર કરો કે કોઈ વસ્તુ કે અનોખી પ્રક્રિયા વર્તમાન સમયમાં ઉપયોગી નથી બની રહી, તો શું તેની ઉપયોગિતા સમાપ્ત થઇ જાય છે?

એ પણ સત્ય છે કે આપણે બધું જ સાચવી નથી શકતા, અને ભૂતકાળની વસ્તુઓની યોગ્ય જાળવણી પણ ખુબ જ મહેનત માંગી લેતું કામ છે. તેથી જ કદાચ, કેટલીયે સ્થાનીય વસ્તીઓ તેમના ભિન્ન ભિન્ન વારસાઓ, ભાતીગળ સંસ્કુતિઓ, યાદગીરીઓ, અને બીજું કેટલુંય જાળવી રાખે છે અને એક યા બીજી રીતે પેઢી દર પેઢી એ બધું સચવાય છે. ભૂતકાળને જીવંત રાખતા કેટલાય ઓરડાઓ આ શહેરમાં છે. સહયોગ અને સહકારથી સાંસ્કૃતિક જાળવણીને વધુ વેગ મળશે એવી આશાથી અમે અહીં આવા જ ઓરડાઓને જીવંત કરી રહ્યા છીએ.
