Oral History Exercise

The Oral History exercise at Pattani Archives was kickstarted in September 2021 with the intention to include more perspectives about the family history in the larger archiving project. It was thus important to identify a variety of key members from within the family or associated from afar and define the scope of the project to be more expansive in nature.

કૌટુંબિક ઇતિહાસના બૃહદ આર્કાઇવિંગ પ્રોજેક્ટમાં વધુ પરિપ્રેક્ષ્યનો સમાવેશ કરવાના ઉદ્દેશથી પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્સ દ્વારા મૌખિક ઇતિહાસની એક્સરસાઈઝ ૨૦૨૧માં શરૂ કરવા માં આવી હતી. પ્રોજેક્ટના વ્યાપને વધુ વિસ્તૃત બનાવવા માટે પરિવારના નિકટના તેમજ દૂરથી જોડાયેલા વિવિધ મહત્ત્વના સભ્યો ને ઓળખવા એ મહત્વનું હતું.

Incubation:

Once the identification of interviewees was sorted across two phases, the exercise focused on incubating two oral historians. While they were qualified in their own ways to steer the exercise, workshop sessions were helpful in experimenting with different tools, creating samples, and arriving at some thumb rules suited for Pattani Archives Project. The workshops ranged from introductory sessions with Avni Pattani on family history and the genesis of the archive, requirements of oral history methodology with Ishita Shah, and audio-editing with Soham Patel, with special inputs by Vatsal.

એક વાર મુલાકાતીઓ નક્કી કર્યા પછી તેમની સૂચિ બે ભાગમાં વહેંચવા માં આવી . કારણકે, આ પ્રક્રિયા બે મૌખિક ઇતિહાસકારો ને કેન્દ્રમાં રાખીને, તેમને તૈયાર કરી , તેમનો સહયોગ લઈને કરવાની હતી . બંને મૌખિક ઇતિહાસકારો પોતપોતાની રીતે સક્ષમ હોવા છતાં, વધુ અભ્યાસાર્થે વર્કશોપનું આયોજન કરાયું જેમાં વિવિધ સાધનો સાથે પ્રયોગ કરવા, સેમ્પલ બનાવવા, વગેરેની જે-તે નિષ્ણાતો પાસેથી તાલીમ અપાઈ. આ તાલીમથી તેમણે પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્સને અનુરૂપ મૂળભૂત નિયમોનું ગઠન કર્યું, અને સુકાન સંભાળ્યું. આ વર્કશોપમાં અવની પટ્ટણી દ્વારા પરિવારના ઇતિહાસની જાણકારી અને આર્કાઇવ્સના ગઠનની માહિતી , ઈશિતા શાહ દ્વારા મૌખિક ઇતિહાસની પદ્ધતિઓ, સોહમ પટેલ દ્વારા ઓડિયો એડિટિંગટ જેમાં વત્સલ દ્વારા વિશેષ સૂચનો સુધીના વિષયો આવરી લેવામાં આવ્યા .

Interviewing:

After a few rounds of questionnaire-building exercises, the team arrived at a basic structure to facilitate their conversations. On one hand, the oral history methodology relies less on predefined questionnaires, knowledge of the archival material and a basic understanding of the family and regional history is critical. The exercise was conducted in two phases, wherein the oral history of immediate senior family members and close acquaintances of the Pattani family was recorded first. In the second phase, the focus was to connect with the Fourth generation of the family who has lived through the yesteryears during their young age and simultaneously experienced the changes over time.

પ્રશ્નસૂચિ બનાવવા ની થોડી કસરત પછી ટીમ મુલાકાતો વખતે સંવાદમાં મદદરૂપ થઈ પડે તેવા મૂળભૂત માળખા પર પહોંચી . જો કે, મૌખિક ઇતિહાસની પદ્ધતિ પૂર્વપ્રશ્નો પર ઓછો આધાર રાખે છે. તેના માટે આર્કાઇવલ સંગ્રહનું જ્ઞાન, કૌટુંબિક સબંધો અને સ્થાનિક ઇતિહાસ માટેની મૂળભૂત સમજ હોવી વધુ જરૂરી છે. આ અભ્યાસ બે તબક્કા માં કરવા માં આવ્યો હતો . જેમાં પટ્ટણી પરિવારના નિકટના સભ્યોને પરિચિતો નો મૌખિક ઇતિહાસ સૌથી પહેલા રેકોર્ડ કરવામાં આવ્યો . બીજા તબક્કા માં લક્ષ હતું ચોથી પેઢી સાથે વત કરવી , જેઓએ વર્ષોમાં પોતાની યુવાવસ્થામાં હતા અને સમાંતરે તેઓ બદલાતા સમય ના સાક્ષી પણ રહ્યા છે.

Post Production:

Oral history recordings have been created across various formats and languages, from English to Gujarati, online to offline, in silent spaces versus busy street-sides, and so on. Thus, it was important for the team to define and follow certain steps of editing, transcribing, translating and mapping, and ensure uniformity for archiving the narratives under the Pattani Archives project. It took several brainstorming sessions to arrive at a framework and set guidelines, and some aspects are still under the microscope. For instance, transcribing in Gujarati poses its own new challenges as each respondent has a unique vocabulary, pace, and style to narrate their stories. Thus, the Gujarati transcripts are being proofread by external consultant, Falguni Bhatt and all transcripts will also be reviewed by the respondents before the recordings are archived.

પોસ્ટ પ્રોડકશન :

મૌખિક ઇતિહાસના રેકોર્ડિંગ્સ અનેક પ્રકારના ફોરમેટ તથા ભાષા ઓમાં વિવિધ રીતે તૈયાર કરવા માં આવ્યા છે. ક્યારેક અંગ્રેજી તો ક્યા રેક ગુજરાતી , ઓનલાઇન કે ઓફલાઇન, કોઈ વારસા વશાંત જગ્યા એ તો કોઈ વાર એકદમ ઘોંઘાટવાળા રસ્તાની પડખે, વગેરે. આથી ટીમ માટે અમુક નિયમ મુજબ જ એડિટિંગ, લેખન, અનુવાદ અને નિરૂપણ કરવું તેમજ પટ્ટણી આર્કાઈવ્સ પ્રોજેક્ટમાં વર્ણનોની સંવાદિતા જાળવવી એ બધું બહુ મહત્વનું હતું. ઘણી ચર્ચાઓ અને વિચારણાઓ પછી એક ચોક્કસ માળખું અને તેની માર્ગદર્શિકા તૈયાર કરી શકાયા, અને કેટલીક બાબતો હજુ પણ સંશોધન હેઠળ છે. ઉદાહરણતરીકે રેકોર્ડીંગને ગુજરાતીમાં ઉતારવામાં અનેક પડકારો હતા જેમકે દરેક ઉત્તર આપનારની બોલી, શબ્દભંડોળ, પોતાનીવાત કહેવાનીરીત, વર્ણનનો પ્રકાર બધું જ અલગ હતું. આથી, ટ્રાનસ્ક્રિપ્ટની ભાષશુદ્ધિ માટે પ્રૂફરીડર ફાલ્ગુની ભટ્ટનો સહયોગલેવામાં આવ્યો . અને, ટ્રાનસ્ક્રિપ્ટ આર્કાઇવ થતા પહેલા મુલાકાતીઓ પોતે પણ તેની સમીક્ષા કરશે.
