Flipgrid lets you record your responses on basically any device that has both a camera and internet access. On your phone (and some tablets), you will need to download the (FREE) app. The picture below is a guide to the different features the Flipgrid recorder offers.
Recording and Submitting a Basic Response
Flipgrid makes it beyond simple to record and submit a response to a topic inside a grid. When you click that Flipgrid icon in the topic, you launch the powerful Flipgrid Recorder. From here you can create and share your stories, performances, reflections, questions, experiments, model problem solving steps, and so much more ultimately depending on your topic!
To help you successfully craft your response, you can view the topic while recording and organize your thoughts and ideas on digital sticky notes. When you are ready to record, simply click the record button (bottom center of the Recorder window).
Once you are ready to submit your response, don't forget to supercharge your selfie by adding a filter, text or stickers, or even flip into whiteboard mode and showcase work if you do not want to be featured in the selfie!
Note that you can further enhance your response to the topic before finalizing your submission, by adding a link to a Google Doc, Slides, , or even a website or blog - just make sure you have the proper permissions set for your digital work that you wish to share!
Recording Your Response in Segments
The Flipgrid Recorder gives students full control over how they want to share their voice and tell their story. They are not limited to recording a complete response in one take; instead, students can record their response to a topic in unlimited* segments. Once recorded, they can trim each segment and reorder, or rearrange these segments to creatively express their thoughts and reflections!
For example, students can use the segment feature to record an introduction using the Flipgrid Recorder. They could then do some #appsmashing by uploading a video clip they have recorded with a different screen recording tool. And, they could wrap up their video response by adding a closing remark back in the Flipgrid Recorder!
*The only limit to segments students can record in a response is the time limit set for the response. If a response only allows for 1min 30sec - the student can record unlimited segments within that 1min. 30sec. time frame.
Amplifying Your Voice and Creativity with the Powerful Features in the Flipgrid Recorder!
Wait a minute! Have you seen all of the incredible features built into the Flipgrid Recorder to enhance and add context to your response? With features including the ability to apply unique filters to set the tone for your recording, as well as the ability to add colorful text, emojis, live digital inking, and even upload images as stickers, students can essentially treat the Flipgrid Recorder as their digital canvas, as they craft a multimodal response to a topic!
Whiteboard Mode and Digital Inking in the Flipgrid Recorder
With Whiteboard Mode and live Digital Inking, Flipgrid has made it simple for students to show their work and demonstrate their understanding of concepts within the Flipgrid Recorder! While recording, a student can simply flip into Whiteboard mode, or select the Blackboard, and use the digital inking tool to demonstrate the steps to solving a math equation, create sketchnotes for various subjects, draw and label a diagram for Science, create a recording of a quick brainstorming activity, illustrate a scene to accompany written work, and so much more. There are so many potential use cases for Whiteboard and Blackboard mode and digital inking for showcasing student learning. See some of the examples below!
Flipgrid encourages participants to not only provide positive feedback, but to keep the conversation going through "Student-to-Student Replies". When allowing "Student-to-Student Replies", consider having a class discussion regarding appropriate conduct on Flipgrid, as well as discussing ways of maintaining a positive work environment for everyone participating in a Topic and Grid!
