We are finally at the 20th century, when America starts to look modern. This era is full of a great deal of important developments including the Progressive Era, Roaring 20's, The Great Depression and World Wars I and II. The United States is changed in a myriad of ways by these diverse developments and afterwards there is no going back to the nostalgia of the 19th century. The US becomes much more modern in economic ways (i.e consumerism and greater government involvement in the economy), social (i.e. women's equality, entertainment culture, urbanization) and politically (i.e. democratic/republican political reorganization, use of propaganda). Period 7 makes up approximately 10-17% of the AP Exam and things happen fast and furious in Unit 7, so pay close attention. . . .
In less than one lifetime, Americans went from buggies to automobiles to airplanes. And in within three decades, they experienced two horrific wars and the worst depression in American history.
Overview: The era was shaped by continued industrialization, urbanization, and immigration. The role and size of government, especially on the federal level, expanded to meet the challenges of a boom and bust economy and two global wars. Debates over the role of government, science and religion, culture
and ethnic diversity also created anxiety and conflicts during this period that included the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan. In foreign policy, the road from noninvolvement to international leadership was unsure, reversed, and then reluctantly accepted by Americans.
Alternate View: This period begins with the Spanish-American War in 1898 and ends with World War II in 1945. But politically, the Progressive Era had its roots in the last two decades of the 19th century, and the New Deal coalition built in the 1930's continues to shape politics today.

Obviously, music is going to change DRAMATICALLY (like everything else) during Period 7. Starting with the Progressive Era (1890s - 1910s), where PARLOUR MUSIC and the compositions of Tin Pan Alley exist along side the beginnings of Ragtime, Jazz, and the Broadway Musical. Huge amounts of music comes out of the WWI years. By the 1920s, most Americans have a radio in the house and early record players are becoming more common. Jazz and Blues dominate the 1920s and 1930s. By the end of WWII, we have the height of the Big Band Era, and the clear roots of what will become modern Pop and Rock music.
