DBQ

THE SCORING RUBRIC FOR THE DBQ HAS CHANGED for the May 2024 Exam.  Everything on this page EXCEPT the 1 Pager has been updated for the new scoring guidelines.

The Document Based Question (DBQ) is ONE of the two long essays you will need to write on your APUSH Exam.   You will have 60 minutes to write this essay and it counts for 25% of your overall score.  Your 60 minutes of time INCLUDES the time it will take you to read/ prepare the documents.

The DBQ will FOCUS ON historical events & processes from 1754 - 1980 (Periods 3-8).  The document set will include 7 documents.  5 of the documents will be PRIMARY SOURCES (text), 1 document will be a SECONDARY SOURCE (text), and 1 document will be some type of VISUAL SOURCE (either primary or secondary) like a map, chart, cartoon, painting, etc.

In general, to score a "3" on the APUSH Exam, you will need to get AT LEAST 4 points (out of 7).  Remember, the first 2 points (CONTEXTUALIZATION and THESIS) are the same as on the LEQ.
